To what extent was the Industrial Revolution characterized by suffering
With any major change in society, there are always winners and losers, and whilst the 18th and 19th Century Industrial Revolution saw great advancement in the iron and textile industries, transportation, communication and banking and an improved standard of living for the middle and upper classes, large groups of society experienced terrible living conditions in big cities and grim employment conditions.
The poor and working classes suffered the most, these were the people that were working long hours for small pay, and were at the mercy of the bankers and merchants and business owners and decision makers …show more content…
Machines replaced jobs that would have normally been undertaken by people and as more people moved to cities to get work, unemployment became greater.
What were the benefits that emerged
So many inventions that have now transformed our life were invented during the Industrial Revolution including the telegraph, the spinning jenny, the stock exchange, the steam locomotive and train passenger services, and the steam boat. These inventions have benefited the whole world through improved communications and living standards. We are no longer totally reliant upon agriculture, the weather and soils to survive.
The industrial revolution also meant that wealth was shared more amongst society. Before the revolution, wealth was in the hands of the aristocracy in the country. However, with a change in how we produce things and movement towards the cities, it meant that many other people involved in business became wealthy.
Eventually, following so much mistreatment of people, new laws were made to protect people in work. This has become a good thing, as our society now has a better system to protect people’s rights if they are being mistreated in the …show more content…
If we hadn’t have had the Industrial Revolution, I would probably be living in the hills, going to a small school with just a few children, not having many clothes, and working hard to produce vegetables. My family would probably be quite poor because we aren’t aristocracy. I wouldn’t get the opportunity to get a great education, to play soccer for a big club, to travel with my family to Cambodia and America, to watch almost any movie I like on Netflix, or to have the friends from all around Adelaide that I have now. My life would be so sheltered and I think I would have been worse
