African Americans, who were migrating to the North in the Great Migration during those times, declared initiative to be a part of the process, as they hope it would help Americans recognize gaps in own democracy and make necessary changes (Williams). At the same time, severe racial conflicts started taking away hundreds of lives of both while and black people at home. Those black soldiers, who joined American Army, were provided with health care and other benefits that were inaccessible before, although they were still trained in segregated places. When in Europe, African Americans witnessed the different treatment from the unprejudiced French soldiers and were reinforced in their determination to bring this democracy to their land.
