Amari is a 15 year-old girl who had a peaceful life with her villagers and her love, Besa; until pale strangers came in her village. They welcomed those pale strangers; stand on her village’s tradition, they always celebrate a party for the visitors. But the visitors don’t come for that, they come to take away the strongest, healthiest people in the village to sale them for money and murder the rest because they are the slave traders. Amari saw her love ones died but couldn’t do anything, she felt helpless and all she could do was cry. Her life was destroyed along with her family and village. Amari was beaten, branded, and dragged onto a slave ship; she was forced to see worst things that she had never thought it would be possible. In spite of Amari, Polly is a white girl and about the same age as Amari. She is the only child of her family of three; but her parents were killed by paying their debt of to Mr. Carton. After her parents’ deaths, Mr. Carton didn’t want to deal with her so he sold her with her debt that she had to pay off for her parents to Mr. Derby where she became a servant and met Amari. Mr. Derby bought her to help him of teaching English to the slaves in his house. Polly also has to teach the slaves their new names and what they have to do. At first, Polly didn’t like Amari because they are different because she was taught by her Dad to not like an African – American. And in time, Polly became friends with Amari. Especially after Clay raped Amari and Polly saw how scare Amari was. They both have the same hope; it’s called “Freedom”. The chance has come when Mr. Derby shot Ms. Derby’s baby and Noah, he told the doctor to take Amari, Polly and another slave named Tidbit to sell them and bring him back the money. But, the doctor didn’t do what he was told. He let Amari, Polly, and Tidbit
