To Whom It May Concern:
I have a fantastic idea that will allow your company to make a significantly larger profit in the future. This is inspired by your 2016 Halloween costume selection. I recommend you market a costume called “White Person.” Featuring the stereotypical large nose, with some appalling freckles, the costume should be available to both men and women.

Advertising companies constantly struggle with ways in which to differentiate themselves. “The more messages they create the more they have to create to reach us; it has led us to a vicious circle of clutter”. Companies strive to “break through the clutter”, which in turn just creates more of a mess. Companies use tactics such as guerilla marketing, an alternative plan to grab consumer’s attention. This method takes an “in your face” approach, something out of the ordinary. In “The Persuaders”, Frontline discusses such techniques and companies’ approach to influence consumers.…

In the 1920s and the early 1930s, feminity was produced in a racial masquerade, so it could be worn or it could be taken off according to “Racial Masquerade” by Alys Eve Weinbaum. Weinbaum states that there are three main parts to this racial masquerade: transforming the visual surface of the body, consuming commodities produced in the mass market, and creating race as a performance. The cosmetic industry was one driver of this ideology of racial masquerade. For example, many advertisements promised “buyers the ability to transform not only the quality, tone, and texture of the skin, but also its racial significance” (Weinabaum, p. 129). The “Vienna Youth Mask” and the “Valaze Face Powder” were examples of products advertised during the 1920s…

Men of high stature and prestige with intimidating power have always been in control of many aspects in a society. Published in 1894, “The Story of an Hour,” has endured longer than the title would indicate and is a declaration of the support of independence for women from its author Kate Chopin. Having read this story before in other courses, and having spoken at length about how Chopin was in support of the idea of woman’s suffrage even before the suffrage movement caught hold, this story leaves a lasting impression and resonates deeper with me every time I read it. Chopin uses her work to illuminate the joy of independence and the oppression that marriage can bring. Whether intentional or unintentional, her message is not only meant for women but, extends to men as well. It is a timeless theme that anyone can learn from in every age. By her use of various literary elements such as, structure, and style, and the use of rhetorical devises such as pathos Chopin creates a work that provokes deeper though and asks a reader to delve into the emotional struggle of her character Mrs. Louise…

Sand between my toes and enjoying some sun while gathered around with a group of friends is what I call, a definition of a great time. The ad Tampax Pearl from Seventeen magazines sells the product through the use of rhetorical fallacies logos, ethos, and pathos. There are six fallacies, and throughout the magazine they are represented by the text, the women in the white bikini, and the beach: false cause, hasty generalization, non sequitur, and appeal to ignorance, false authority, and bandwagon. In the background are the sounds of waves clashing against one another, the sun beginning to lower, and the scent of a bonfire. The game of limbo used as an entertainment to influence laughter, and competition spread to one another.…

Well-known Sci-fi writer, Ray Bradbury, in his novel, Fahrenheit 451, illustrates that relationships reflect who individuals are and who they want to be. Bradbury’s purpose is to promote the idea that a person should have the courage to listen to their own beliefs and thoughts of happiness rather than to blend in with society. He adopts a disoriented and poetic tone in order to appeal to similar feelings and experiences on a non-realistic scale in his young adult readers.…
