To clarify what's out there to be investigated, Southall begins the handbook in earnest by defining the terms, since ghosts, spirits and poltergeists are not interchangeable and represent quite different phenomena.Ghosts and apparitions are a kind a recording on the environment - a residual energy that can come from a person, animal or even an inanimate object. We can experience these lingering energies by sight, sound, smell and touch. Spirits are what people most often think of as "ghosts." A spirit is the "actual sentient presence, or soul, of an individual or individuals who have remained in the material world after his or her physical body has died." Southall continues by describing different types of spirits and the reasons they may have stayed behind.…

In Stephen Wagner’s article “Mothers' Messages from Beyond,” Wagner writes about the accounts of real people who claim they have felt the presence of their mothers in some way after their passing. The article includes five personal accounts from other people, along with Wagner’s own personal experience. The supernatural accounts vary anywhere from hearing whispers, seeing apparitions, and even seeing the deceased in one’s dreams. Wagner’s primary point is that a mother’s love and presence is so powerful, it can be felt in the physical realm whether the mother is deceased or nowhere near the child. One example of a mother’s presence being felt in the physical realm while being disconnected physically or mortally with their child was mentioned in the account of Kris in August, 1975. Kris claimed to have heard her mother’s…

Paranormal activity has been a hot topic worldwide for decades. Horror movies, novels, and television shows have been based on myths, legends, and even stories that are claimed to be true. Since many choose to watch or read about ghosts, there is debate over the authenticity of the stories and the existence of apparitions altogether. Author Joe Nickell, a stage magician, private investigator, and journalist argues that his experience with apparitions proves that paranormal accounts are entirely false, specifically involving notoriously haunted hotels, inns, and other lodgings. He offers several premises to debunk the ghostly accounts of people worldwide, using quotes and analysis from a variety of researchers and also his own personal encounters.…

“You know you see the world differently than most,” my mother once said casually in a passing moment between antics. Automatically this statement set a blanket of panic over me. We were driving to the grocery store; I wasn’t expecting my mom to just drop a philosophical bomb on me. It was one of those things I never thought about before. Did I see more colors than other people? Do I actually see ghosts? Does everyone else see ghosts? What cool ghost parties have I missed out on? While the questions I first presented don’t really mean anything this was unknowingly the foundation for a core belief of mine. I believe in people’s perspective.…
