Rhetorical Analysis Of Last Week Tonight By John Oliver
When talking about controversial topics in today’s society, people with larger followings often need to be a little bit more cautious and concise with their opinions or feelings in order to avoid sparking widespread arguments and audience backlash. With people in today’s world arguably growing more and more sensitive to ideas that oppose their own, humor is often a safer tactic to use to lighten the mood and make points without coming off as too offensive. John Oliver often uses humor and lighthearted jokes to talk about topics and present ideas on his show “Last Week Tonight”. In his comedic attempt to explain and bring up issues dealing with economic development, Oliver uses information about how state and local governments offer extremely …show more content…
People will often click on a video hoping to leave with more knowledge than they began with. In the end they won’t learn anything at all because of the biased opinion that people often throw out. I feel that Oliver did a fairly good job of keeping the purpose of his segment clear and concise. After watching the video, it was clear to me that he intended to explain or provide further information in order to better understand the economic development currently taking place in the United States. He used real examples of corporations being lured into locations and all of the money that is being used for tax breaks that go along with this luring. The examples that he used helped to work towards his overall purpose and that was quickly very evident to me. The genre used throughout the video was geared more towards comedy and I feel that helped positively affect the purpose. The use of comedy helped to engage me further on a topic I otherwise wouldn’t have been interested in and got me to laugh at points. When information is dry and boring throughout the presentation, it can be harder for people to focus on, so the fact that comedy was added really helped keep me …show more content…
With something as large as the current state of economic development, the voices and opinions on the subject can be found being discussed by people far and wide. Anyone interested in politics in general could be found discussing this topic, however it doesn’t just stop there. Anyone involved in the business world could also take an interest in this topic because of the widespread effect the economy has on people in many different sectors of the world. Economic development is an on-going issue because as long as there has been a need for more jobs and more money flowing throughout the economy, there has been the topic of how the economy itself is developing. What drives the passion for this topic is the public’s general interest in the well-being of the economy. This topic itself could fit into much larger conversations when discussing the success of President Trump and how he has impacted the economy. Whether you support him or are against him, people can always talk about the state of the

The article by Jayme Deerwester in USA Today online is a rhetorical and slight propagandist piece on the interview/ debate between Trevor Noah and Tomi Lahren on the Daily Show. The writer writes in a very bipartisan and not biased on either side of the political spectrum. She talks about how the debaters were, “engaged in a spirited but respectful debate and managed not to talk over each other, a feat that's become all but unheard of on cable news the last few years.” (Deerwester, After That 'Daily Show' Interview) showing that she got taken aback by how the debate went and how calm both sides were to talking even if Tomi could have been aggressive due to being in a place that finds her views bothersome and frightful. She then later talks…

Author for the Washington Post, Joel Achenbach, in his columns, addresses issues from the secret to happiness to Artificial Intelligence. He addresses these issues in a manner of different ways, like expert testimony, analysis, and other rhetorical devices. Achenbach’s purpose as a writer is to inform the audience of the consequences of one’s actions, as mentioned in his article, “Researchers create a Computer Program that learns the way humans do,” when he states, “The breakthrough comes during a period of great excitement in the A.I. community, but also some anxiety about whether there are sufficient safeguards to ensure that machine intelligence doesn't somehow run away from its human creators.” He adopts a consistent tone throughout his columns, one of a casual, yet explanatory voice.…

To begin with, Oliver from the very beginning makes Trump seem like a fool for proposing his border wall. Within the few seconds of the segment, Oliver shows clips from debates and rallies of Trump describing his wall in a prideful way stating, “I will build the greatest wall that you’ve ever seen.” At one point Oliver even states that Trump does not only have pride in his wall, but also wants to make love with…

In my opinion, speakers have the power to create situations through their speeches. News erupted that a former Texas A&M student invited white supremacist Richard Spencer to host a conference. His audience was filled with white supremacist and anti-white supremacist who wanted to challenge his point of view. He gave a speech on Trump’s policy of immigration. He states “Therefore they could go home, you can go home again … They came here peacefully … They could leave peacefully.”…

On June 16th at his very own Trump Tower in New York City, Donald Trump announced that he would be running for president. It was only thirty seconds into his speech when Trump committed his first fallacy. In an attempt to insult the intelligence of his fellow GOP candidates, he compared their incompetence toward air conditioners to their supposed inability to beat ISIS. “They didn’t know the air-conditioner didn’t work,” “How are they going to beat ISIS?” This is a bad example fallacy due to his use of an example that fails to prove the conclusion and has little connection to it. Despite the complete lack of relation between Trump’s example and his conclusion, he was still able to provoke the audience into feelings of contempt toward the other…

As Edwin Starr’s famous anti-war song goes, “War! What is it good for? Absolutely nothin’!” and if Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five had a theme song, this would be the perfect song. Slaughterhouse Five is one of the greatest anti-war books of all time- it even says so on the back cover. In order to convey his anti-war attitude to the readers, Vonnegut uses many different rhetorical devices in Slaughterhouse Five, including analogy, irony, and satire.…

United States foreign policy in central and east Africa has remained relatively consisted since the 1990s. The Clinton, Bush and Obama administration worked with, as President Bill Clinton labelled ‘new generation’ of African leaders to help bring stability and Western oriented market-focused economic development policies. Western assistance composed on the premise of foreign aid for social development of schools, healthcare facilities and progression in human rights. Kate Chopin's story, "The Story of an Hour" is an ironic short story of a wife in the late 1800's. The story is only a few pages long and in doing so Chopin writes a story filled with kernel's (events that have important causal chronological coherence) with very few satellite's (events not logically essential to the narrative action). There were no satellites that I could find while reading the text; I found every word written essential to the narrative, the progression and the conclusion of the story.…
