Rhetorical Analysis of “The New Eugenics” George Neumayr is an executive editor of The American Spectator, which is a conservative journal devoted to politics and culture. In 2005, George Neumayr wrote in this journal an article called “The New Eugenics.” In this article, he focuses on the ethical and moral values of aborting a disabled fetus. In his article, George Neumayr uses three strategies to present his argument including giving background information about prenatal screening, gives examples of lawsuits, and how it has become a duty to abort a child with a disability. He describes prenatal screening as “a eugenics designed to weed out the disabled…” (649). By using this strategy, the audience can get a general idea of what prenatal screening is used for. Doctors us prenatal screening “to screen unborn children for disabilities…” (649). In today’s society, it is very common for parents to desire the perfect child. Not only does George Neumayr use logos to give information, but he also uses words that appeal to the audience’s emotions and some ethos for credibility. He explains in his article that “they [doctors] indicate the cast majority of unborn children prenatally diagnosed as disabled are killed” (649). Quotes like t his one appeal to the audience’s emotions, making them feel sad. Also in this article, Neumayr refers to aborting disabled children as “an intolerance for those who don’t fit the norm” (650). Neumayr explains that “owing to prenatal technology and eugenic abortion, some rare conditions, such as the genetic disorder Tay-Sachs, are even vanishing in America, according to doctors” (650). This particular quote is effective because it both appeals to the audience’s emotions and provides credibility at the end to doctors.
