Rhetorical Analysis On Reddit
Here is our paper that we produced for the group project. Our topic was on the analysis of the moderation processes on Reddit. I have added the introduction and my portion on oversharing.

Introduction

The integrative social networking platform Reddit combines modern pop culture into a registered discussion website. Established only twelve years ago, Reddit is a functional worldwide website that allows its users to submit and comment content in the form of text posts, images, or direct links. Reddit organizes itself through forums which are then categorized into larger forums called subreddits. The subreddits can vary in theme to the user’s discretion as long as the forum follows Reddit’s content policy. Content is then further moderated and

Specifically, we will be trying to answer the question, “Should web communities such as Reddit, be monitored or controlled – if so, how much, and under what circumstances?” The second question we are hoping to explore is, “Should Reddit have stronger expectations from its users regarding respect for other users and their privacy?” Each author is entering this analysis with limited knowledge to the platform, which allows us to explore the rhetorical constructs of Reddit from an unbiased perspective. Understanding how virtual communicative technologies function is an essential aspect of modern social patterns. An intriguing aspect we will be analyzing further about Reddit is how it moderates its content through participatory policymaking to maintain the idea of a healthy community. Other topics that we’ll explore include: the concept of oversharing, and how it has become problematic on digitalized social communities such as Reddit; complex breaches of privacy due to piracy; and admin intervention regarding cyber bullying. Supported by communication theories and virtual artifacts from Reddit itself, we will grasp how the sub-communities of Reddit work towards creating an idealized …show more content…
Reddit is an online forum that allows its users to post about certain topics within procreated subject areas and adding comments to other people’s posts. It is common for online communities to have oversharing and Reddit is a prime example of that. Reddit allows people to post their thoughts and ideas about a certain topic or news that others might also be interested in. An issue with that is people tend to overshare these ideas beyond casual conversation. When people are sharing intimate details about themselves in regards to their location, their interests – they are revealing parts of their person that one would not normally share. The act of oversharing can cause individuals on this website to feel a sense of closeness due to opening up to other users. With the easiness of Reddit, it is easy to overshare without even knowing, but this is time leads to a person essentially abandoning their

“When every thought is externalized, what becomes of insight? When we reflexively post each feeling, what becomes of reflection? When friends become fans, what happens to intimacy?” (348). Orenstein has a strong argument, when we share every moment for the world to glimpse at, it strips away your personal identity. People lose their own sense of humanity and how they treat others in real life. It is analogous to the saying where people become objects and objects become people. Everyone loves the wrong object and treats others in the wrong way. A study by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan concluded that people have lost empathy, especially after the beginning of social media. Orenstein states, “Social media may not have instigated that trend, but by encouraging self-promotion over self-awareness, they may well be accelerating it” (348). The destruction of relationships will worsen as time goes on since people are slowly losing humanity traits, such as empathy, due to people being engrossed in social…

The relationships we build when we share information makes a connection with the speaker and the listener. Theses relationships often can turn personal rather than professional. There is an art to sharing and being aware of what we share and how we say it. In disclosing information I learned that is also has to be done with interest in the others feelings and an interest in what the others will disclose(Stewart,2012)…

Dave Chappelle returns to his hometown of Washington D.C. in the year 2000, during his tour around the country, to perform for the people of D.C. Many people in today’s society tend to believe that a good education is the fastest way to move up the ladder in their chosen. People believe that those who seek further education at a college or university are more intelligent. Indeed, a college education is a basic requirement for many white collar, and some blue collar, jobs. In an effort to persuade his audience that intelligence cannot be measured by the amount of education a person has Mike Rose wrote an article entitled “Blue Collar Brilliance”. The article that appeared in the American Scholar, a quarterly literary magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, established in 1932. The American Scholar audience includes, Company’s , Employees, Educators, Students, CEO’s, and many others. Author Mike Rose questions assumptions about intelligence, work and the social class. Reading the whole article, the biggest things that stood out to me was on page 63; “It usually takes a lobster between thirty-five and forty-five seconds to die in boiling water.” I took some time to think and at first I came up with putting a lobster into a boiling pot of water. But I couldn’t find the metaphor in that because that was the main idea I wanted people to see. So I decided to draw a healthy tree falling into a wood chipper and how when it goes through a wood chipper, the time it takes to actually shred the wood into pieces of bark has its own time process just like when putting a lobster into a boiling pot of water.…

Social media is described as the potential space of interaction where citizens are simultaneously exposed to news and the views of people in their social network. While most people use social media only to receive friendly updates, obtain emotional support, or to flip through photos and videos they may also be subject to political persuasion without any knowledge of it. Frequently citizens are influenced by news media and/or social context when forming their own conclusions about politics. Usually political persuasion is achieved through the conversations people have because they can ignite disagreement, which in return leads to someone being influenced to change their views. The Internet and social media are also considered to be heterogeneous networks for the reason that it is very diverse. This diversity can attribute to the fact that people are shown alternate views on politics, which of course leads to the persuasion of change. Once an individual has been exposed to new viewpoints it boosts their demand for new information that supports their current thoughts and beliefs. Both disagreement and diversity go hand and hand with each other. Such a diverse network can lead to disagreement among people who believe that their thoughts are true and others are false. The diversity urges people to seek new views and more information, contemplate their own…

Social media has now become a part of our modern day society and has a huge impact on our lives on a daily basis. Social media is the use of web and mobile-based technology to support interactive content. This content tends to be user generated and then might be promoted by other users to a new outlet or audience. Social Networking is a great advocate of social media, where content is distributed amongst a network of online friends, which can then be reposted or ‘Retweeted’. Twitter and Facebook are the main social networking sites and have had a great impact on the debate of regulating social media.…
