In the blurred definition of a successful life, happiness and pleasure are characteristics that have been lucid and parallel in the many contrasting ideas. Amongst successful icons in today’s society, Steve Jobs has been admired by many people as a role model and a representation of a successful journey. In Steve Jobs's commencement address to the Stanford University alumni, he elaborates on the idea that it is essential to follow one’s heart, in order to find what genuinely makes one happy. He also emphasizes the necessity to find a profession in which one is talented and willingly able to enjoy, in a way that portrays happiness in what one does as success. His idea that “[y]ou've got to find what you love” (15). In reality, Jobs is already communicating an idea that people exercise in their lives. For instance, as human beings, people are more motivated to do something they love and find pleasure in doing. He presents this idea with his own personal story where he found what he loved, which was working at Apple and creating innovative technologies, and remained determined to continue the work he loved. Jobs demonstrates his determination in his speech through his repetition of the advice “[d]on’t settle”(15). When one finds something they love, one is impelled to continue searching for it, because it has created a relationship much greater than just beneficial to oneself. A clear example of this is seen in the book The Pact, written by three doctors, Sampson Davis, George Jenkins and Rameck Hunt, who manage to get through the difficulty of medical school. With a drive for a better life, the boys do not settle with their previous conditions full of violence, drugs, and crime, and take on multiple opportunities to earn their degree.
