solutions for the problem. The poetic devices that he used through the entire essay, was an interesting
way to convey his argument.
In the first paragraph, the author first hooked the reader using a different form of writing technique,
poetic device, to proceed to deeper information in the following paragraphs. The metaphor for freedom,
stating “the lights are going out” gives an interesting overview to the issue. The author uses a

He does this first by asking questions such as “Is this a call to war?” and “Does anyone
pretend that Preparation for resistance to aggression is unleashing war?”. Not only do these questions
take the audiences to think twice on this issue, but it also rebuts to possible arguments for his essay.
This technique solidifies the author’s stance in the issue, even while referencing to other possible
perspectives. In addition, the author finishes the final paragraph using another metaphor, such as
“banish from all our lives the fear which already darkens the sunlight to hundreds of millions of men!”.
As seen from this context, the author carries on with his first metaphor for “light” to conclude his
argument. This shows that the author’s emphasis on his argument could be found with the “light”,
which symbolizes liberty and freedom. Restatement of his argument using this poetic device gave
stronger impression to the audience
Lastly, the repetition provides more of poetic impression to the entire essay. In the fourth paragraph of
his passage, sentence starter for describing the mighty communities is “Like the communists…”.
