Definition: Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder. It affects the small joints of hands and feets, and the lining of joints that results in painful swelling. Swelling can cause bone erosion and joint deformity. RA is an autoimmune disorder, in which the immune system falsely attacks own body's tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis not only causes a joint problem, but it can also affect the other organs of the body such as the skin, eyes, lungs, and blood vessels (Miller, 2014).
Etiology:
RA arise from the attacking of immune system to synovium. The synovium is a lining of membrane surrounds the joint. Inflammation causes the thickening of the synovium and this lead to a destruction of the cartilage and bone within the joint. …show more content…
Prognosis:
RA increased risk of developing:
Osteoporosis: Rheumatoid arthritis itself and the medications that are use to treat rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of getting osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones are weakened and are more likely to fracture.
Carpal tunnel syndrome: If rheumatoid arthritis affects the wrists, which causes the inflammation and this can compress the nerves. Those nerves help in functioning of the hand and fingers (Miller, 2014).
Heart problems: Rheumatoid arthritis can increase the risk of hardening and blocking of the arteries and the inflammation of the sac, which encloses the heart. People with RA are at increased risk of heart disease, mainly ischemic heart disease. Although, patients are at high risk of being hospitalized because of myocardial infarction, angina, or congestive heart failure.
Lung disease: People with rheumatoid arthritis have an increased risk of inflammation of the lungs and scarring of the lung tissues. This can cause a progressive shortness of breath. Also, includes high blood pressure, nodules in the lungs, developing a blockage in the small airways, and scarring of the
