My patient, Debbie, is a 40 year old female who has been diagnosed with Hypothyroid and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) within the past 9 months. She is under care with her primary care physician, Rheumatologist, and myself, a Complementary and Alternative Medical Practitioner. I have chosen the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities of naturopathy, to try to treat her conditions, which includes treatment of the body as a whole, her mind, body, and spirit.

Also incorporated within these modalities is the essence of Deep Breathing and Aroma Therapy. I would also recommend an exercise regimen to increasing her physical activity, decrease her fatigue, build stronger muscles and bones, increase energy, flexibility, and stamina. This would include Yoga, Tia Chi, and swimming, and which all have stretching benefits and very easy on the joints. Both Yoga & Tai Chi are almost interrelated, both are exercises of the body and mind involving focus, breathing technique, and a slow, smooth movement (Roberts, D. 2003). You can take either modalities and customize them to your level of experience, from novice to expertise.
Acupuncture would be very beneficial to a patient with RA, for pain relief. This Ancient Chinese Tradition that has become a commonly utilized CAM treatment within the past twenty years, in the U.S., due to the fact that in 1996 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved acupuncture needles as an official medical devise (Roberts, D. 2003) The treatment involves placing small needles at trigger points on the body at a specific depth with the use of vibration to help stimulate nerves and remove any
