Last season Rhode Island was projected to challenge the Dayton Flyers for the A-10 title but E.C. Matthews suffered a season ending injury just 10 minutes into the opener. The Rams lost their best player and started the butterfly effect on a season plagued with injuries. With Matthews healthy again and four of its top scorers back, Rhode Island is determined to make some noise.

As a freshman, he led the A-10 in blocks. He enters his senior season ranked second among all active Division I players in career blacks with 247. The 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward is the reigning A-10 defensive player of the year. Kuran Iverson is one of the league's top rebounders. He grabbed 10 or more boards nine times as a junior. Last season he averaged 7.1 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-9, 215-pound senior is also an offensive threat. Iverson averaged 9.8 points per game. Andre Berry is entering his second season with the Rams. The 6-foot-8, 285-pound junior provides depth off the bench. He averaged 3.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last year but has the potential for a big game. Nicola Akele is another forward that has a chance to make an impact this season. He is a good shooter. Last season he averaged 2.8 points per game. Rhode Island can expect an immediate impact from freshman Mike Layssard. The 6-foot-9, 280-pound forward was a two-time all-state selection in Louisiana. He has the size and the skill to be a force down low. He averaged 24.6 points, 2.6 blocked shots per game, as a senior for Northwood H.S. Cyril Langevine is a 6-foot-7 three-star recruit. He was one of the top power forwards in America. He averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots for The Patrick School as a senior in New Jersey.
