Richard Blanco's Poem 'One Today'
In the lines above, I have gathered alternative word choices for different passages of Richard Blanco’s poem “One Today”. These alternate words were chosen because of the possibility that readers could be of a younger age group, and might come across the original words and not know the meaning of them. The reason I would make these changes is to basically make the poem easier to read for all ages. With the help of online dictionaries, you can find simplified and precise definitions of words. As for online thesauruses, you’re aided in finding synonyms of any given word. The two websites that helped me the most were; http://dictionary.reference.com/ and http://www.thesaurus.com/. If you don’t want to use online versions, book bound versions are

A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift fits the satire definition because throughout the whole short story the man is proposing real life problems in society and turning them sarcastic. He uses sarcasm to emphasize how well he believes his ideas would benefit his country, Ireland. For example when he talks about the Irish eating their babies due to overpopulation. This wouldn't be an effective way to end the problem but instead people should stop having…

In "Poem by Poem" by Juan Herrera, he reflects on the shooting that happened in a church in Charleston, SC on 6/18/2015. As he reflects in this poem, he uses poetic elements such as caesuras and repetition to convey the complex feelings of pain and grief he feels, as well as trying to bring attention to how lost America's gun laws are. Herrera often uses caesuras, which is when you break the flow in the middle of the sentence. He does this very often, such as, "we can end the violence every day after every other day. " The long pause, can infer to the reader that these long pauses mean much more.…

Blanco uses several rhetorical devices throughout "One Today", more so in the first few stanzas. An example of figurative language he used was the repetition of certain words or similar words in order to create a flow within the poem. "My face, your face, millions of faces in morning's mirrors" is a line in the poem that best represents this. Blanco also uses personification to give a better description of the beauty that he is describing, such as "plum blush of dusk". Another use of figurative language found in stanza four is the repetition of the word "hands" which he uses to represent the many hard-working hands of America and the things they do to contribute to the well-being of the country.…

Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…

Is it possible to care for one thing so much that the destruction or loss of a city can have no significance to a person? When a person loses so much on a daily basis, when does the loss start to make a difference? In the poem “One Art”, Elizabeth Bishop utilizes structure, rhyme scheme, and conceptual symbolism to portray that the loss of one’s love negates the loss of everything else.…

In the above lines pulled from the poem "One Today", I put the words in bold that I would change if I had been the author. I would change the word "write" to deliver, because anyone can write a poem, but Blanco was stating that his mothers hard work got him where he is today, and not everyone is able to deliver a speech at a presidential inauguration. In the second and third examples, I would change "hear" to observe and "tired" to weary, as I believe those are stronger word choices that will get the authors point across with more conviction. I would change the word "head" in the fourth example to trudge, because in the following lines, he gives examples of hardship and is trying to convey how exhausted the person is. Finally, I would change…
