Richard Chelson Character Analysis
After years of fascinating complaints, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) received their favorite one yet. On the morning of November 25, 2016, the FCC received an interesting email from the Mormon’s of Tomorrow leader, Betty Dickerson. In the email Mrs. Dickerson, expressed that on Thanksgiving morning her son, Richard Dickerson, verbalized what he was truly thankful for. Coming from a well-respected family in Mount Pleasant, Utah, Mrs. Dickerson said she was expecting her son to be thankful for his extended family, his Cocker Spaniel “Lucky”, and his playmates. However, what Richard shared with her was not what she had been expecting. Mrs. Dickerson said that Richard pulled out a picture of his favorite T.V. show characters, Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato, from the famous T.V. show VeggieTales. “It was at this moment,” wrote Mrs. Dickerson, “that I could not believe what I had seen. Richard attempted to draw these two inappropriate characters, but instead drew images that resembled …show more content…
Dickerson tells sources that she plans to take her complaint national and attack the “broader issues” of media today. The FCC, however, have not entertained this matter and do not plan on mobilizing any plan of action. “...This is simply because the show is indeed not inappropriate or pornographic in any way, but can be left to interpretation by the masses,” said Mr. Wheeler. In fact, an insider from FCC headquarters in Utah, gave their description of what the office staff’s reaction was, “Our complaint department was at a standstill, ...do we respond to this woman and express our sympathies, or should we ignore it for its severe lack of legitimacy and logic?” One employee opted for a better solution, with a suggestion of watching season 3 of VeggieTales. The FCC have made no further communication with the Dickerson family, but staff from the complaint department now crack a smile when Larry the cucumber urges kids to make the right choices, even when it’s

Television has been under fire since its dawn; even though it has been one of the most widely used forms of mass media since it replaced radio after the 1940’s. By both mirroring and modeling American cultures and values , television gave critics a platform to create regulations because of the negative impact that it seemed to be having on our youth, yet at the same time praising it for creating public awareness.…

Sin is a word that humanity over time has greatly diluted. God’s meaning and mankind’s meaning of sin are tremendously far apart. Sin for many people has taken on many shapes and forms. Mankind has grown so dull to sin that most of our actions are not defined as sin. It is referred to as everyday life. Sin is a problem, which attacks humanity from within ourselves, our environment and influences from the enemy. In order to understand what sin is, there must be an understanding of the word itself. To define sin is as follows “commit illegal or immoral action.” What happened to anything that was against God’s Law? Living in a world that seeks to please it’s self, we as believers are called to be set apart. In an analysis of my own life, I found there were certain areas of my life where I had no idea I was still undergoing some continued collateral damage from sin. For purposes of this view into sin, sin will be looked at from the three areas which affect mankind. The first area that will be looked at is the flesh, secondly the world system. Last but not least the enemy. All three areas are vital to understanding how to deal with sin in our lives. Finally we will speak of the blessing of the cross that gives us freedom over sin in our lives. The flesh I think is the hardest to deal with. Understanding the flesh and the cravings it has is half the victory over the flesh.…

The requirement, enforced by the Federal Communications Commission, is based on the indication that children 17 years of age and under are not a likely audience throughout these hours. This was one of the prior efforts targeted towards enhancing the goals for children’s television before the Children’s Television Act.…

The problem began when President Clinton signed the Telecommunications Reform Bill into law on February 8,1996. A group of people, led by the ACLU went to court and succeeded in temporarily stopping the implementation of the bill's "decency provisions." After this district court decision, Janet Reno appealed directly to the Supreme Court. The most controversial parts of the Communication Decency Act (CDA) were those that gave criminal penalties to those who knowingly sent any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication deemed "indecent or obscene", to a person under 18. Penalties were also put forth if this information was received by persons under 18. In addition, the "indecent" material included any information that portrayed or described "sexual or excretory activities or organs" in a way deemed "offensive" by community standards. The overall problem was that the Act was unclear and overly broad concerning what internet communications should be criminalized. #…

"I think we should do exactly what we have been doing for ten years. Every time you hit the button, you are saying the FCC is right. Every time we hit the button, we are saying we're doing something wrong. And I suggest to you there is nothing wrong about this show. We are in a war. It's a cultural war. The Republican Party used to stand for -- and I supported this -- less government in your life, less intervention in your life, less control of your bedroom and your private life. They no longer stand for that. [Attorney General John] Ashcroft is out of control. He's looking to invade your bedroom. He doesn't want you watching porno. He doesn't want you looking at statues. He doesn't want you watching HBO. He doesn't want you to hear this show. It's absolutely out of…

With more and more frequency the newspapers are reporting instances of school children distributing disks of pornographic images which they have downloaded from the net and recently a university student was found to be operating such a site for material. On November 11, an Associated Press release (Phillips,1994) reported that Carnegie Mellon University had decided to block its users from accessing sexually explicit materials through the Internet: the university's president feared that the university could be prosecuted under state pornography laws if it did not control the access. Within the last week Towson State has prevented access to all of the alt.* groups on the Usenet which include alt.binaries.pictures.* which has sexually explicit pictures. Towson State has also included a warning on their home page that there may be pornographic material on the Internet. Pornographic material is not the only material to be found on the net which can raise questions of censorship and control: discussion of racial, political, religious and sexual topics all run the risk of offending someone, somewhere, leading to demands for control of the Internet. The question of censorship may also be raised in some unexpected places: one newsgroup is the rec.humor list, which is a collection of jokes submitted to subscribers. There are straightforwardly rude jokes but others are politically incorrect, focusing on sexual stereotypes, mothers-in-law, women and so on.…
