Richard, the protagonist and the world around him are described through a cynical, funnier and positive view despite all the personal, social/ historical and tragic conditions which evokes a feeling of empathy rather than pity.
The film begins with Richard’s family on a heart breaking road to parenthood; they are struggling through seven miscarriages and Richard’s mother depression state and loss of way in life, despite Richard’s successful birth. All these moments mentioned above and the ones that I will describe now are building a background scenario allowing us to observe, how chaotic Richard’s earlier years were around his family. The following strong image is received by the audience, a close up of Richard’s mother sleeping on a birthday table while Richard checks her pulse. Richard’s mother has an incessant depressive behavior and sleeping pills abuse due to all her miscarriages; Through Richard’s character we realize he doesn’t have anyone that cares for him, but even so he has a strong will and a dream than later
