Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Three Messages

(An Analysis of Three Messages from Rime of The Ancient Mariner)

In room 303 we have studied many texts. Rime of the Ancient Mariner was one of the most recent texts. Though there are many messages that could be taken from this story, there are a few that stood out most to me. Pride, suffering, and isolation are three themes or messages from Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

The first message from Rime is pride. In the story, the mariner kills the albatross that seems to be an occurrence of good luck. This is shown when the mariner says, "God save thee, ancient mariner! From the fiends, that plague thee thus! –Why lookst thou so?" "With my crossbow I shot the albatross.” (Lines18-20) Because of this pride, he does something that he soon regrets. As punishment for killing the bird, his crew makes him wear it around his neck. Not only that, but shortly after that, everyone but the mariner dies. This happening can also be traced back to the Christian idea of pride being one of the biggest sins. As is says in the proverb, “pride goeth before the fall.” Pride can cause many issues in life, as shown by the story of the mariner. The story Pride and

Because all of the crew members died, it caused the mariner to be isolated for a extended amount of time. In the story, this only friend is a hermit, which explains a lot. He was a very sociable guy before this incident. Now, he just travels around looking for lonely and lost souls like himself. The sadness and isolation is shown when he says, ¨Down dropped the breeze, the sails dropped down, 'Twas sad as sad could be; And we did speak only to break The silence of the sea!¨ There was nobody else around and they were isolated for a very long time. From the Gowyld site, I learned that isolation may not only be physical but also spiritual. This is proven with the line, ¨Because of this, the isolation of the actor is spiritual almost as much as

To gaze into the lyrics of both Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur is like living in the ghettos of New York City where violence never stops. Both of these artists grew up seeing and living a life filled with violence. Gunshots and drive-byes, death and murder were a daily occurrence. Although the lyrics of both artists are simply telling their life stories and how hard it was to grow up in their “hoods” they contain vulgar, hateful, and sexual verses that send the wrong message to their listeners. Whether these listeners are teens or adults, white or black, they are continually sending notions of hatred and fear through their lyrics and actions. Ultimately, their lyrics, actions, and creation of the East coast West coast rivalry began promoting violence to whoever hears, listens, or watches them.…

A simile is used when they say “given broad strokes of murder by a pelican lumbering shoreward, then diving with a splash like a car wreck, rising cradling a fish in his bill, and so emerging triumphant”. Although there is only one simile in this poem I believe this symbolizes a lot in the poem and about life. This effectively says how the pelican was determined to get the fish as food for survival and how the fish was helpless as part of this feat. It’s kind of like a cycle of nature. It is like survival of the fittest. Everyone needs different things in order to survive. The message of this explains how we must always be determined, never give up and we will be triumphant or victorious in life as the pelican was. We all strive to emerge triumphant in everything we do, it means doing the best we can always. For example I want to do well at college so I can have a good career in the future. Athletes always strive to improve and win every week, especially at the professional level, when they know their living wage depends on it. This is an example of survival of the fittest cause in the workforce or in the NFL if you don’t succeed or aren’t determined to make it, you’ll get cut and this is what this poem is telling us is you have to always be determined to succeed in life and have goals, just like the pelican had a plan of attack for how he was going to kill or “murder” the fish in order to survive, we…

The mariner's story is about killing an albatross that had led the ship away from the storm and the icy seas. In return for helping them, the seamen fed the bird and played with it. Despite this partnership between them all, the mariner took his crossbow and shot the albatross. He was cursed when he killed the albatross. A ghost ship appeared with a woman and a skeleton and they played a dice game which she won. This was the point that he realised it was a curse from killing the albatross. The curse made the crew fall down dead and their bodies did not rot or decay in any way. They lay with their eyes staring at him. It was a punishment so great for him because if he tried to do any thing normal they would be staring at him. For the mariner, the worst punishment of all was because he was responsible for the deaths of his entire crew on the ship.…

Beginning with the main issues surrounding “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” it is impossible to believe that Coleridge was not thinking of the mysterious wind that blows on the Mariner, without any awareness of the wind as a Biblical symbol of the Holy Spirit. Coleridge could also associate the murder of the albatross with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The reader is told that the Polar Spirit “loved the bird that loved the man / Who shot him with his bow” (Line 404). Signifying a strong tie/bond between the two. This bond not only relates to the ‘love between the man and the bird,’ but rather, the connection between an individual and religion. It is doubtful that someone with Coleridge’s Christian background and faith could fail to see an analogy with God who loved his son who loved the…

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a very interesting poem by the great Samuel Coleridge. A lot of people feel that the poem has no meaning. And that it doesn't delve on anything significant. Others will argue that this poem is one of the more important pieces in all of english literature. I feel that although I dont see the true meaning of the curse that the Mariner has after he kills the albatross, but I do have my ideas as to why he did kill the bird. And also what came from killing the bird, the curse.…

-> The next literary technique used is irony. The lines "Over the mirrors meant To glass the opulent the sea-worm crawls-grotesque, slimed, dumb, indifferent," (stanza III) shows that the glamorous things were now nothing more than a sea floor for the worms. Also all the jewels that were present on the ship, being worn by first-class passengers were now sitting at the bottom of the ocean floor. The usage of irony represents the loss of the ship, instead of the loss of life. These lines are indicative of the author's attitude towards what the ship stood for. He didn't want to talk about the tragedy with all the lives lost, instead he…
