For example in To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus made a small difference in the town of Maycomb County. Though his small act did not change the whole world, it changed how the people of Maycomb County saw things. During the trial, Atticus teaches Scout and Jem to never judge or look down upon someone before you’ve been in their shoes. ‘First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (87). He taught Scout and Jem to not always to jump to conclusions about people because of their race or “class”. During Tom Robinson's trial many people looked down on Atticus for defending a man of a different race; this didn't change Atticus’ mind, it just made him work harder. For example Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus to a white man, and she was arrested for violating state segregation laws. “Her actions would have an immediate effect on other members of the African American community and a lasting effect on the national history of Civil Rights” (Batten 1). This act started the Montgomery bus boycott which had a huge role in the Civil Rights Act. It taught people to stand up for what they believed in no matter what the consequences
