Instead of the empire falling into turmoil the empire went in the direction Genghis Khan wanted to under Ogedei Khan who ruled from 1229 – 1241. However unlike Genghis Khan, Ogedei Khan was a self- indulgent and a passive ruler. This being said Ogedei Khan was a charismatic leader who is able to manipulate doubters to his will, intelligent and reliable. He was the reason the Mongol Empire was able to expand into Eastern Europe through invasions of Russia and Bulgaria. Later the Mongols were able defeat Poland in the Battle of Legnica in 1241. After this the Mongols defeated Hungary in the Battle of Mohi executing half the Hungarian population. Ogedei Khan was praised for his military skill and his willingness to listen to his generals. He was also able adapt to his surrounding quickly helping the Mongol army seize control quickly, he sadly passed away on December, 1241. The ruler that was elected after Ogedei Khan was Guyuk Khan- Ogedei Khan’s son he ruled in 1246 up until his death in 1248 before he could make any significant achievements.
