The Risks of Tanning and Exposure to the Sun The largest organ in the body is the skin, yet so many people are willing to abuse it. When it comes to indoor tanning, about thirty million Americans choose to tan each year. Seventy-five percent of these people who are under the age of thirty have an increased risk of melanoma. The worst part is, once the skin is damaged the skin, there is no way to reverse it. The risks of tanning and exposure to sun can lead to various diseases, which include various forms of cancer, eye damage, and damaged skin. Damaged skin has short and long-term effects. Rashes, burns, and irritated skin are some of the short-term effects. Long-term effects, such as baggy skin and age spots, cannot be reversed. Premature aging is when the skin “ages” quicker than it’s supposed to. When the skin ages too fast, it looks less attractive. Premature aging takes the shape of wrinkles, dark spots, and leathery skin. These three sub-categories are all considered forms of premature aging. Clearly, premature aging is a direct result of over exposure to UV rays. Wrinkles can be thought of as folds in the skin and are mostly found around the eyes and mouth. Although wrinkles aren’t harmful, they are thought of as what “old people” have. Akwasi, I had never thought about tanning bed usage being a type of addiction of behavior repetitiveness. That's an interesting point, as something becomes a habit we tend to just continue to do it without consciously considering any consequences of it. I didn't know about any possible issues with the DHA used in the sunless tanners either. That's another consideration we should take into account before deciding to use them even though they are considered at the levels used with them to be non-toxic and safe. I have used a sunless tanner occasionally in the past, but this will make me more alert to be continuously checking for updates of the safety of their usage. It is really eye-opening to see what a health risk tanning beds can be, alarming…

Exposure to UV radiation, which is utilized in tanning booths, damages dermal tissue and the lens of the eye (“Ultraviolet Radiation”). The dangers of tanning beds is not widely known because the public is not educated on the problems that may occur from overexposure to UV radiation. Turns out the UV rays are much more damaging to your eyes than to your skin, and in a tanning bed, not even closing your eyes can protect your vision (Wallace). Frequent tanners do not realize how dangerous ultraviolet radiation is for their eyes. In a tanning bed, your eyes have direct exposure to the radiation emitted from the tanning bulbs. So far, only 15 states in the United States require goggle use while inside a…

A common misconception among the public is that if they can not see visible damage to the skin than no damage has been done. The danger is not the sun light, it is the type of Ultra Violet Radiation (UV) light found in Artificial Tanning that causes the real damage. The Ultra Violet Rays used in tanning beds are concentrated radiation and penetrate deep into the skin; more so than natural sunlight (Upton, 2002). Although ultraviolet rays do have a purpose, according to the Indoor Tanning Association indoor tanning is an…

One is you acquire older looking skin over a long time period of using a tanning bed. From person experience, I know someone who is the same age as me who lays both in the bed and sun and her skin looks like leather and looks like she is in her thirty’s when in-fact she is just 20. I completely agree with you that tanning should be limited or avoided if possible. Individuals who tan expose their skin to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) including areas normally protected by clothes. The UVA and UVB radiation that is used in tanning showed over double the amount of mid-day sun and can lead to the development of melanoma cancer which is the least common among the three primary skin cancers, but the deadliest (O’Sullivan & Tait, 2014).…
