Rite of Passage

Everyone in their lives has to experience a rite of passage and mine was when I was just acquiring my drivers license. Many people go through the same situation when they are first getting their drivers license. This event made a significant impact in my life. It was an event that was accompanied by fear and anxiety which also contributed on how I saw myself as an adult. It also changed the way people around me saw me as an adult and not a child anymore. There were many significant things about this event that made it important. One of them was, If i got my license, I would not have to depend on my parents or some friends on getting a ride from them. I did not have to feel humiliated by my other friends who owned a car. I wouldn't have to bother my parents to get picked up or to be taken somewhere I wanted to go to. I would be able to drive anywhere I want when I have my license. I would not have to depend on anyone anymore but myself to go to places. Acquiring a drivers license would benefit me a lot in many ways. There were many preparations I had to accomplish to get my license. I first had to go to the DMV to take my written exam so I can get a permit first. After I passed the test, I had to wait 2 weeks to get my permit in the mail so I could drive with some with a license.I now had to schedule an appointment to take the 5 hour course which is required to get a license. After I completed the 5 hour course, I scheduled an appointment with the DMV to take my road test. The day to my appointment was coming up so my sister had me drive her car to practice with it. But I wasn't just driving any automatic car, I was driving a stick shift car with 6 gears. I had to drive the car around town so I could get comfortable with it until the day of my road test. As the days kept on coming and getting closer to my road test, the more nervous and scared I was. On the day of my road test, I was excited to know I was going to be driving soon. At the same time, I was so nervous and scared. I was nervous because I did not want to mess up and scared of failing it. As the instructor sat on the passenger seat, my heart started beating really fast. But, I did not let my feelings take over me so I kept calm and did what the instructor told me to do. As questions and directions by the instructor were being told, I simply kept my answers really short with an "Ok, Alright, No problem, yes, no, and Sure." After the test was over the instructor told me to pull over to the side of the road and told me I passed. I felt a relief coming from inside of my body and all the anxiety leaving. There are many ways actions can separate you from being a child and an adult. My parents started seeing me as an adult when I told them the good news that I passed my road test. They figured that I was not going to be that kid that they had to take everywhere and pick him up after school. My parents saw that I was responsible when I had the car and they mostly didn't even think twice about letting me drive. There are many prospectives that separates a child from an adult.

The novel God’s Bits of Wood is similar to that of a Rite of Passage or a Rite of Passage and Gender as the people of Sudan grow into more complete citizens. Along this journey there are many heroes or heroic moments; there are also the elements of trickery. As this story is both a Rite of Passage and revolves around heroes it means there should be a Trickster or trickster energy that helps guide the protagonist to their destination. Although he has many heroic moments, his objective is to stir up a conversation, creating chaos that leads to conversations between the employers and employees. On the day of my behind the wheel driving test I had mixed emotions. I was a little bit nervous, what if I do not pass and was getting a little bit excited, thinking of all the opportunities I had if I did pass. I was nervously waiting in the car at the road test parking area for a DMV proctor to come. While my driving instructor, Hayk was chatting with other instructors in the shade. After what seemed to be the longest wait in my whole entire life was just fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes past, an orange cone was placed on the hood of my car signaling I was next.…

Birth is one of the most significant events for Hindus. In some families, the father performs a ceremony immediately after the birth. He dips a gold pen into a jar of honey and writes the sacred Sanskrit symbol: “Om” onto the infant's tongue. The symbol, which stands for truth, is written in hope that the child will be honest and speak only the truth, which is sweet as honey. After a little more than a week, the baby's name is formally given. Usually the name of a favorite god or goddess is chosen and whispered into the child's ear for three times. If the baby is a girl, then within a few weeks, the baby girl has an ear-piercing ceremony. Both boys and girls have their hair cut, symbolic of renewal and the shedding of wrongdoing in past lives. Overall, in common, a birth of a baby is the most beautiful thing. A birth of a baby is considered as a rite of passage because it changes the life of the family. They bring such joy and happiness to the family.…

Families are full of odd quirks and traditions. Whenever my dad’s family gets together for a birthday we have to set up a spanking train that the birthday boy has to go through as many times as his birthday is. We all have our separate ways that we do things, and this is no exception to how families treat a growing teenager. Every family gives their child different responsibilities, freedoms, and guidance as he grows older. My family is no exception. As I have scanned back on the last couple of years, I have found a few rituals in which I was slowly promoted, rank by rank, to the status of adulthood.…

The first event that I choose was graduating high school. The reason I choose this event and experience is because no one in my family had ever graduated high school. My mother, father, nor my brother ever got a high school education. Although, my mother and father never married I can remember them both saying that they didn’t finish high school. My father got a GED but my mother still to this day doesn’t have either a high school diploma or GED. My brother just quit school at the age of 17 and took to the streets. So this was very important ordeal for me. I can also remember other family members say that I wasn’t going to graduate high school or I would come up pregnant while in high school because my circumstances was different than everyone in the family. I proved them all wrong and graduated high school without becoming pregnant and most of the one’s that was downing me their kids ended up pregnant in high school and didn’t graduate high school.…

This was a fantastic day. The night before was thinking, “Wow, it’s actually happening. Tomorrow”. Then I woke up the next morning. On a friday! How much better could that have been. There was a football game later, classes went super quick, there was an assembly I was excited for as well. So the classes were short because of the assembly. I ended up getting picked up early. Right after 6th period. When i was headed to the gym. I got called down to the office. My mom got me and then we went straight to the DOL. It took a few minutes, I’d say around 30 minutes because they needed my waver from my drive instructor in drivers ed in to be able to give me my permit. I wasn’t able to get a picture on my permit because my mom didn’t get my actual birth certificate. But then the lady said to get behind the desk and sign everything. Then she printed it out and she handed it to me and we walked out with it and my mom handed me the keys. I got in the car and she did the mom thing and took a bunch of pictures. But in that moment I felt that feeling of growing up. I felt so trusted and I thought about all these huge privileges I had just earned.…

Getting my license has changed my life forever. This event has allowed me to prove to myself and my parents that I am capable of being on my own and ready to function in the real world. My whole life my parents have regretted the decision to start me in school early. They always worried that I would be unable to handle the stresses of adult life at such a young age. How are you ever going to survive at college?” This theme has come up a lot throughout my life at home. From when I wanted to get a credit card, and even to when I wanted to go on dates. Adrenaline ran through my veins as I stood up and attempted. Instantly I fell and scraped up my knees. A little scrape on my knee was not going to bring me down. I got back up and tried again. I started going down the road and said to myself, “This isn’t that hard! I’m doing it!” Now this was accomplished because I was going on a straight road with no obstacles. The fun really began when I came across a busy road. I looked both ways and started off. I didn’t realize that going off the sidewalk to the road would be so difficult. I was never taught how to get over the bumps on the end of the sidewalk, so I fell and landed in the road. I dragged myself to the other side because I didn’t know how to get back up and a car was coming right for me.…
