For the live theatre show, I decided to watch “A Christmas Story, The Musical” directed by Valerie Easton at Vancouver Arts Club Stanley Industrial Aalliance Stage. The show focuses on a child named Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.Valerie’s production captured the happiness and cheerful atmosphere during Christmas and also focus on emphasizing Ralphie’s desire of a BB Gun as his Christmas present. During the show, I was impressed by many design and technical production elements. For example, the quick changes, the adequate use of theatre stage and also the use of sets to change from fantasy and reality. However, the most striking elements to me are the set piece of Ralphie’s house and the sufficient use of rigging system.…
One of the rudest person I've ever known was the Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The reason why I think he is rude is because he actually threw a christmas tree at someone and he wrapped a little girl in gift wrap and then left her there like a christmas present. He also stole everyone's presents. At the end if the movie the Grinch had a change of heart and gave all the presents back. That is why I think he is the rudest person.…
For my musical choice I picked Rodeo: Hoe Down. I think the mood in this music is happy there is a lot of upbeat rhythms and tones. The speed is very fast and quick it never stops its instruments and makes me want to dance. The dynamics are loud and will wake you up when you are taking a little cat nap. This piece had no voices but a lot of instruments. There is a piano on wooden blocks, trumpet, xylophone, and the violan. I think this piece is trying to convey happiness, laughter, and dance. It makes me want to get up and dance all…
“Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of the best known songs in The Nutcracker. Miles Hoffman, the music commentator for Morning Edition and a nationally renowned violinist, once stated, “And many of them [Tchaikovsky’s melodies] in this - just in this one ballet [The Nutcracker]- are immortal” (Hoffman). Tchaikovsky first began work on the music to the now internationally renowned ballet in February 1891 (Schwarm). While in Paris that year, he heard an instrument called the celesta, whose name is derived from the word celestial, being played, and thought its unique, twinkly sound would be perfect for the music of the fairy-tale ballet he was working on. This instrument is used as the melody in the song “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” (“History of Nutcracker”). In March 1892, selections from the orchestral suite were performed for the first time; however, the ballet, based on Alexandre Dumas’ lighter adaption of the fantasy story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, by E.T.A. Hoffman, premiered on December 18, 1892 along with Tchaikovsky’s opera, Iolanta, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia (Schwarm). Originally, the ballet was not popular; however, it…
First performed in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the classic Christmas ballet, The Nutcracker has been shown for over 100 years. The composer, Peter Tchaikovsky, and choreographer Marius Petipa teamed up to create a timeless production as an adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s tale "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King." This pair had previously worked together on another classical ballet, Sleeping Beauty.…
The Paper Fan is a piece of art that in its time has been in the presence of princesses, ninjas, and college students. Taking on several roles both in an imaginary and reality. Each experience aging the paper that stretched across bamboo frame. Opening it reveals a water color and ink print covering the face of the fan. Painted is a family of birds before a background of greenery. Fully expanded the width reached to fourteen inches and standing in length at nine inches. Width shrinks drastically down to one and quarter inch when closed. Unlike the length with is virtually untouched, remaining at nine inches. Surrounding the edges of the fan are tears in paper and chipped shafts. Falsifying the actual age of the fan. Attributed the constant use throughout its time. Overall, the fan gives a sense of calm and delicacy. The origin of provenance reaches across the Pacific Ocean, my father would travel to Japan returning with various Japanese art pieces. Bequeathing me the Paper Fan at the age of eight. Notably, the significance of this piece stems from the calm and still that surrounds the simplistic form. In that calm the…
The Nutcracker is a wonderful story, and there are many versions of the story, including movies, plays, and ballets. The original story was published in 1816 by E.T.A Hoffman, and the original ballet was in 1892, but some people have change the story over the years, but they kept the plot very similar of the story.…
The viola player tapping the viola with the bow to make a sound like blink blink blink was creative in my eyes. It was interesting to see a beautiful piece played with only three instruments. The song is so beautiful that it sounds like music you would hear in a fairy tale forests. I liked the piece “Soft Watches” by Ileana Perez-Valazquez. It was a creative and fun idea to make the piece based off the painting Salvador Dali’s famous painting “Persistence of Memories”.…
My favorite dance was the women’s jingle dance. Personally, I felt that the Jingle dress stands as musical instrument itself because of the metal clinking. In other words, a simple dance movement such as crossing the dancer feet can produce beautiful music along with the sound of the drums. It was interesting to see the women dances to move and stop their fetes exactly when the drum beats.…
The same tune would get caught in your ear, then it was moving you faster or slower; as well as that tune getting louder or softer at appropriate intervals coinciding with the dramas taking place. I also noticed a few woodwind and harp solos during the brighter, happier moments of the performance. The use of castanets and tambourines also caught my eyes and ears. Of course, there was tremendous use of varying the pitch and tempo as well as how loud or soft the music was. Again this is all to enhance how the emotion was conveyed to the audience. Additionally, a piece that stuck out in my head as I left (mainly because I’ve never really noticed or caught on to it until after learning this in one of our class sections) was toward the end when a solo played for a period of time and then that instrument was joined by all the other instruments—playing the same thing—in consistent pleasing…
The world of The Nutcracker can’t be completed without the music score from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, a famous Russian composer who also wrote the Swan Lake. The two main sources of hearing for the audience are from the storyteller, and the classical music from Tchaikovsky. One of his most famous works for the Nutcracker is Op. 71a 11. b. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The soothing music goes well with all the graceful and beautiful movements. The Nutcracker and its music is surely a great introduction to ballet and classical music to a newbie like…
4.What is a ballet? How did Romantic composers change this music form? A ballet tel;s a story of the dancer movement through music. The original composers added a few sections to the current piece, ad they change its form, constraints and rules…
Introduction-Sometimes the things you do can affect you on your future and make you get marked again from them. On the act of “A Christmas Carol”, we read how one of the main characters (Scrooge) was the man that no one didn't like and when he changed. He was a completely different man and, could take care of anyone. Scrooge had a lot of problems in his life that he had regret but, the most effective problem was that he'd lost the person he'd truly care about and the people that made him go forward.…
Butterfly Dances was probably my favorite from that entire night. It is a set of variations from traditional Chinese folk songs which Root had expanded into viable melodies. It sounded to be in ABA form, but also seemed to be in symphonic form. It was very beautiful. You could hear the fluttering of butterfly wings from the wind section of the band. The last movement was more dark than the rest. It had a forte and mezzo forte dynamic, as well as there was some ritardando and crescendo in the piece. The tempo changed between vivace, allegro and andante. I really enjoyed it. Thomas Root really got way into conducting. He was jumping and flailing his arms all over, which was rather entertaining.…
