To be able to nurture America, the founding fathers strongly believed in isolationism because unique geographical position America was in. In George Washington’s Farewell Address, illustrated the fact that the country isn't compatible with European interests, and warned the country about alliances. Although America was isolationist, they still built up their economy, expanded their borders, and intervened in neighboring wars. In 1867, called Seward’s Folly, the United States purchased Russian land, now known to us as Alaska, marking the new beginning of American imperialism, the colonized colonizing.…

Pietra Rivoli, author of The Travelers of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy, refers to Friedman’s The Lexus and the Olive Tree, how he describes, “The gazelles win by running faster and smarter than the competition, but the lions win by catching and eating their prey”(52). Rivoli uses this theory to American cotton farmers, who are both the gazelles and the lions. She talks of them as gazelles because they squeeze income out of every step in their production chain, while feeding cattle and people with the leftovers. The growers are also gazelles because of their advance scientific research and how they run their businesses. They globally dominated most of the world by creating a symbiotic relationship with the farmers, universities…

Introduction: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a higher concentration to a lower one through a semi-permeable membrane and occurs in the cells of organisms. It is affected by the addition of solute which would lower the water potential, making water potential and solute concentration inversely related. The concept of osmosis loosely described is that the presence of more solute outside the cell means the presence of less solvent (or water molecules in this case) and vice versa; the goal of osmosis is for the water molecules inside and outside of the cell to be equal, causing equilibrium and a stop to net water movement. The goal for a recent lab was to test whether cubes of potato would gain or lose weight depending on the amount of molar concentration of sucrose they soaked in. Solutions made of different molar concentrations of the solute sucrose were prepared before this lab. Potato cubes were weighed and recorded as the initial mass in the data. Four cubes of potato were placed into 100 mL of each solution and let stand overnight. The cubes were then taken out for the final total mass to be measured and recorded. In this experiment, the potato cubes were the dependent variables, and the molar concentrations were the independent or manipulated variables.…

The epic of Sunjata is an essential piece of African literature because it exemplifies the African structure and most tribal cultures as well. It most prominently illustrates the culture and order that are found within the tribes and also the amazing ability of the son of King Maghan and Sogolon; Sunjata, who was destined to be the greatest king ever in Mali. When Sunjata was born, a curse was placed on him by the king’s first wife to make him born lame. The curse worked and he turned out to be lazy, greedy and ugly as well. At three years old, Sunjata could not walk and rarely spoke. Even at seven, the boy still crawled and spent all his time eating. As a result of this, the king’s first wife made her first son the king after Maghan died. Sunjata told his mother that he would walk that day and commands the blacksmith to make for him the heaviest possible iron rod. He does so, and the rod is given to Sunjata in front of a large crowd of onlookers. Sunjata successfully lifts himself upright using the iron rod and bends it into a bow in the process. The people that live in the area where Manding oral tradition is are the people who live in the kingdom of Mali.…

Rudyard Kipling's endearing "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" initially appeared in 1895 as part of the second volume of The Jungle Book, a collection of children's stories set in colonial India that Kipling wrote while living in Brattleboro, Vermont. Telling the tale of Rikki-tikki-tavi, a brave and heroic mongoose, and his battle against the evil king cobras, Nag and Nagaina, "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" is a war story that depicts in the simplest of terms the triumph of good over bad. Emulating the contemporary trend in children's literature to create imaginary worlds to appeal to a child's imagination, "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" takes place entirely in a small garden populated by anthropomorphized birds, snakes, muskrats, and frogs.…

Based on the personality profile I completed in class my personality type is ISTJ, Introverted Sensing Thinking Judging. According to various sources on personality types ISTJ's are often referred to as "Inspectors". I agree with a lot of what I have read about my personality type. ISTJ's often give the initial impression of being aloof and perhaps somewhat cold. This is perhaps one of the truest statements about me that I have seen. Many people find me to be cold and standoffish if not conceited and stuck-up. I prefer spending time alone, or with a few close people rather than go to parties, bars, or clubs. Very often when I go to the mall or other chaotic places I am over stimulated and overwhelmed by the people and the commotion. After an hour or two of such activity I feel the need to go home, it becomes too much for me.…
