Historically, the River Lee has flooded repeatedly over the last century. It flooded in August 1986 as well as February 1997 (Fitzpatrick, Bree 2015) and more recently in November 2009. The river is a critical aspect of civilisation in Cork and has many geographical importances, such as shipping, tourism and transport. It is feared that further flooding will implement further damages as every year passes. The city of Cork may not be able to handle these damages as most of the city is built adjacent to the river. Small businesses, hospitals and large companies barely survived previous floods and another flood may be detrimental to the economy of Ireland. The River Lee is a fertile source of water, plumbing and living for the people of Cork. Yet when it floods it transforms into a devastating economic blunder, it destroys soils leading to falls in exports in Ireland, it destroys businesses and homes and interrupts education due to evacuations.
