Rizal’s Special Friend It started with a letter. An extraordinary letter bounded with memories. Two great names in history having such friendship that no one could ruin nor destroy. How could it be? It was on February 8, 1886 when Jose P. Rizal arrived in a historic city in Germany which was known for its old university and romantic surrounding – Heidelberg. On his 5th month of staying in Heidelberg, he wrote his first letter to a professor named Ferdinand Blumentritt who was studying the Filipino language. Ferdinand Blumentritt was an Austrian Ethnologist and a Director of the Ateneo of Leitmeritz,Austria married to Musa Mueller. He was just one of the foreign people who has a heart of a Filipino. He was born on the 10th day of September year 1853 in Prague. (Spittael, 2011) The professor was amazed by the letter sent by Rizal and so he sent him a gift of two books as a response. A letter that brought them together into a beautiful friendship. Though they met only once it was not a hindrance to their friendship for they wrote each other a letter for once in a while. It was only more than 211 letters their correspondence consists of, yet their friendship has an unmeasurable memories marked in that letters. Ferdinand Blumentritt became his best friend and they ended up addressing each other as “Mein Bruder” which means My Brother in English. He was also Rizal’s number one proud supporter when it comes to his works and writings. A letter where Blumentritt stated “ I know already that you were a man of extraordinary talent: but inspite of this, your work has exceeded my hopes and I consider myself happy to have been honored with your friendship.” (Zaide, 2007) This alone shows how glad he was of being part of Rizal’s life and considered a special one. Everytime Rizal learned new languages, he would directly send Blumentritt a letter telling him the good news. Even in Rizal’s agony, Rizal wrote Blumentritt a letter expressing his bitterness. Until one day, a letter shocked Blumentritt. Though he was aware what his friend Rizal was facing, he was not that prepared of such situation thinking that it will be the last letter he’ll receive from his special friend, Jose P. Rizal. The letter from Fort Santiago which was written in German had a final note: “When you receive this letter, I shall be dead by then. Tomorrow at seven, I shall be shot; but I am innocent of the crime of rebellion. I am going to die with a tranquil conscience. Adieu, my best, my dearest friend, and never think ill of me! ” (Zaide, 2007) Seventeen years had passed after the death of Jose P. Rizal, Ferdinand Blumentritt had come to an end on the 20th day of September 1913. Friendship is earned through sincerity. One does not need to meet each other to develop a friendship. Even the distance could never be a hindrance. Rizal, even in his last minute did not forget his special friend Ferdinand Blumentritt to write a letter for his formal farewell. A bid that in his afterlife will treasure the friendship they have shared. Ferdinand Blumentritt, Rizal’s special friend.

On the 19th day of June in the year 1861, in the second half of the 19th century, Jose Rizal was born into a Philippine society governed by a system that brutalized and degraded the inner beings of Filipinos all over the archipelago. Despite the discontenment it had caused, Filipino natives remained to be stagnant and full of ignorance towards a noble principle that of social welfare. “Historical development in the Philippines in the second half of the 19th century,” as stated by Leopoldo Yabes in Rizal, Intellectual and Moral Leader, “demanded an appearance of an intellectual and moral leader, and Rizal was the answer.”…

The movie “Jose Rizal” is all about our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal – Hislife and works, his struggles in order to free his countrymen from abuse, until his death under the hands of the Spaniards who occupied our country for a very longtime. Most of the scenes of the film took place during Rizal’s imprisonment at Dapitan wherein he meets Taviel, a Spanish officer, who will eventually defend him on his trial in court. During their meeting, Taviel asks Rizal everything about him and his works through various questions. Every answer that Rizal brought out from his mouth made Taviel realize that Rizal was indeed an innocent man. On the course of their conversation, Rizal talks about the making of his Two Novels “Noli Me Tangere” and its sequel “El Filibusterismo” which are both anti-Spanish Novels that depicts how the Spaniards rule the Philippines and how the rights of the Filipinos were abolished. Rizal portrayed himself on the said Novels – as Crisostomo Ibarra on “Noli Me Tangere” and as Simeon on “El Filibusterismo.”Going through with the movie, while Rizal is telling his story to Taviel, the scene on the movie switches from his life story then to his portrayal on his Novels. Sometimes the scene gets very difficult to follow because of the sudden switches during the scenes on the movie most especially during the time that his first novel was on the process of writing. Rizal, a brave and a man of his word, was never afraid whatever theconsequences he may suffer because of his writings that are against the friars and also to Spaniards. His goal was to free the Philippines from the unjust government of Spanish colony. In summary, the movie talks mostly of Rizal’s life until his death and the creation of his great novels. The actors and actresses who acted on the movie did a great job presenting how it was during Rizal’s time even though the said events in Rizal’s life were just written in books.…

Rizal's life story was full of love and hope. His mother taught him how to make poems, read Spanish inscriptions like the Bible, story books and among others. He was also a dedicated brother to his siblings and a son to his parents. Hes got a lot of talents and skills. He knew how to perform magic, paint various picturesque scenes, did sculpturing, played the piano and the harp and others. He was such a gifted child that when he entered school, some of his classmates got jealous at him. Even though the case, he still strived his hardest and tried to search for answers that linger in his emotions, in his thoughts, in his mind and in his heart, of why the Spanish people continued to oppress the Filipino people so easily, without even showing any mercy at the very least.…
