Road Not Taken
According to Dr. Joel Hoomans, "An adult makes about 35,000 remotely conscious decisions each day." People are granted with free will and numerous choices throughout their life. Some decisions can be as simple as deciding what to eat or what shirt to wear. Other decision can be more thought provoking. For example, who to marry, what job to take, and where to live. Many of the choices we have to make result in picking something over another, this can lead to careful contemplation and even regret. Robert Frost poem "The Road Not Taken" gives a perfect illustration of making a choice in one's life and the thought process someone may go through in making a choice. The poem takes place in the woods with the speaker coming across a fork in the road

People can relate to being placed in various situations where they must also make a final decision. Frost poem opens in line 1 with "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood" giving the reader a mental image of two pathways splitting in different directions. This symbolizes the moment where a person is faced with two choices and only having the ability to pick one. For example, a high school graduate may have to decide which college to attend, understanding that there are pros and cons to both colleges and a final decision has to be made. In addition, the speaker describes each path, one being "Grassy and wanted wear" (line 9) and another being "Bent in the undergrowth" (line 5). The speaker's description of the two roads symbolizes his perception of how someone can choose to live their life. One path seeming to be more commonly used, perceived to be an easier path. People may choose to always take easier or shortcuts through life. The other path seeming untouched perceived by the speaker as more of a challenge.
