Expository Essay: Russell “Why Not” Westbrook Russell Westbrook is a reigning MVP and considered one of the most furious finishers who dunks over 7 footers and over 6 footers. “With the tenth pick in the 2010 NBA draft, the Indiana Pacers select Paul George of Fresno State University” That was the start of his career in the National Basketball Association, a career filled with uncertainty and now on the cusp of superstardom. But can you imagine, the player who is supposed to be the next coming of Reggie Miller or Scottie Pippen suddenly leave the town and team that gave him the opportunity to blossom into a star and gave him unwavering loyalty, just to have a shot to play with his childhood idol, Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers? That might be the next chapter of his story as a player in the National Basketball Association.…
From the dismantling of the Soviet Union to the rise of democracy in Eastern Europe, desert storm, and liberating Kuwait. Earvin “Magic” Johnsons announcement of his retirement from professional basketball due to his contraction of aids is just as crucial. The creation of his foundation has helped those with and without aids. Also the impact of his announcement created worldwide awareness and helped dispel many misconceptions surrounding aids and how it’s contracted and who usually get it. Lastly his own inner battle with protecting his fellow teammates and opponents to possible infection and continuing his legacy is tragically poetic. And his redemption through being voted to the all star game and later that year playing in the Olympics and winning gold was a fitting end to his year. Magic Johnson’s announcement will go down in history as the most historic event of…
Die with fame, not without. A.E. Housman can concur. The poems, “Ex-Basketball Player” by John Updike and “To an Athlete Dying Young” by A.E. Housman both concentrate on what occurs after an athlete’s days of glory. Most of them seek fame, but only a few will achieve it. Their goal is not to die within their days of glory, it is to live on and have their fame live for an eternity. Unfortunately, in today’s society athletes mainly want the monetary success that comes along fame. They quickly become judged by their actions and can be forgotten if they do not reach stardom or fulfill their fame set by the standards of society. Sharing similar themes of adversity and death, the two poems still differ from one another. This causes the authors to…

Growing up with a dad who was All-State for Basketball, and a Grandfather who played Division I basketball; I was always expected to be good at ball. I was always decent but never quite lived to expectations. When I turned 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Type 3 scoliosis, which limited not only my quickness but my ability to twist and run normally. The basketball dynasty was coming to an end as I had lost a lot of athleticism. I was always on the middle team, not very good, not very bad, but I always tried new moves; which made me hard to guard. I finally quit all sports because my back couldn’t handle the stress, and I wasn’t prepared to go into surgery. One day as I was watching…
Many people have a difficult time letting go of their past. When you can’t let go of your past, you can’t move forward into the future. In the “Ex-Basketball Player” by John Updike, Flick Webb finds himself holding onto the past and not being able to move on. I chose to write my research paper over Schizophrenia. It is a psychological disorder that I have always found fascinating. Approximately 20% of North Americans will be affected by a mental illness during the course of their lifetime. (MHA, ‘What You Should Know About Mental Illnesses) More specifically, 1 in 100 Americans will suffer from schizophrenia. That means that 300,000 people in America will, at some point in their life, be affected by a very serious and highly misunderstood mental disorder. (Schizophrenia Society of America) It is a serious disorder that consumes a person 's life and is nearly impossible to control. Basketball isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. It requires you to push yourself again and again and not give up until the final buzzer sounds. The comparison to an injured person and a person who just lost a family member are psychologically similar. According to an article written by Natalie Walker et al., “…grief management has been most frequently adopted within the sports psychology literature when describing responses to athletic injury. … the grieving individual passes through the following five sequential stages: (1) denial, (2) anger, (3) bargaining, (4) depression, (5) acceptance” (Walker et al. 2007). The athlete in this case study comes from a high-profile life style due to his ability to perform on the football field. He has worked hard in earning several titles and having a highly recognized name. As a freshman, he was a ranked in the top 25 as one of the best overall…
