How does the novel, We all Fall down, demonstrate many of the weaknesses in modern society?
. The novel “We all fall down” by Robert Cormier sets out to illustrate psychological, emotional and physical weaknesses endured by individuals in modern society. It also highlights other weaknesses such as isolation, escapism, failure of relationships, and family decay in contrast to family unity. Ultimately through these themes the composer Robert Cormier depicts the weaknesses individuals face in modern society.

This is presented primarily by the character Buddy Walker who doesn’t faced the challenges place upon him, and also relies on alcohol to escape the world. Cormier addresses this through the use of repetition “Buddy nodded, eager to end the conversation, eager for Harry to turn away, eager to get away from him.” Cormier adopts the repetitive word “eager” to emphasize Buddy’s desire in turning away, not facing the challenges placed upon him, and “eager” to escape from the situation. Another technique employed the composer is simile “That’s what was happening now, all the rotten things were stealing away…replaced by a glow spreading through his limbs, as if his body were a light bulb on low intensity”. The composer delivers this technique to emphasize Buddy’s dependant on alcohol in order to escape his terrible world. Ironically in this novel we witness the victim Jane falling in love with the trasher Buddy who smashed her house. Cormier delineates that the failure of trust may result in the failure of a relationship. The composer incorporates this through the use of strong emotive accusatory language “You make me sick...I don’t want you here in this house, don’t want you in my life. I only wanted you to come in here one more time. Now, get out. Out of house. Out of my life.” Through the use of strong accusatory language the composer emphasizes the emotional damage Buddy has inflicted upon Jane. It also shows that there is no turning back and it is the end of there relationship. Another technique also used to accentuate the damage caused is through the use of repetition of “house” and “life”. The composer does this to reinforce that there is going to be no turning back and the relationship is finished.
