Robert de la Salle was born in 1643 in Rouen, France. He was originally named “Rene Robert
Cavalier.” At age 23 he sailed to New France, now considered Canada. He farmed and traded furs.
Salle was told by the Native Americans about two independent rivers. The Natives said that the rivers lead to the ocean. Salle was determined to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. In 1669, Salle started explorations toward the great lakes. Salle was prepared to start an exploration towards the Mississippi River. He believed it led straight to the Gulf of Mexico.
