Robert Gould Shaw was the Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, he had shown bravery and leadership during the Battle of Antietam in which he survived. This led to his opinion and/or thoughts on colored soldiers, and his father had submitted Robert Shaw to be Colonel of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Shortly after, Governor John Albion Andrew offered the role of Colonel to Robert G. Shaw. Throughout the movie and during the battles, Shaw would write and send out letters to both his mother and father. Colonel Robert Shaw had wanted to keep colored people fighting in the battle because he thought they actually deserved a chance to fight for their country. As Robert starts the training for the battles, he realizes that many of his men in the colored regiment were uneducated and weren’t serious about fighting and showed immaturity. As Shaw is giving out orders to his men to start training and practice shooting, Colonel Robert G. Shaw writes a letter to his mother, talking about how colored people are learning a lot faster than white people. Shaw begins talking about Jupiter’s skills, and …show more content…

Later after, the regiment and Colonel Robert Shaw had found out that the colored regiment would only get paid $10 a month, while whites would get $13 a month. Shaw saw how all his men felt about the money, so Robert decided that if that’s how they were going to pay them, in an unfair way he decided to rip up the paper in which had the information about the money. Robert felt happy in a way that he could let his men know that he wanted everyone to be treated equally. There were many orders which were given to Colonel Robert G. Shaw and his men, although they were orders from the higher ups Robert did not want to follow those

This idea raises the question of: why was it not possible for Glory to be the experiences of Black troops as told by Black soldiers? Having the point-of-view shift from Shaw’s to Trip’s, Thomas’, or Rawlins’ would have allowed viewers to stray away from the one-dimensional idea that all Black people of the 19th century were unmotivated and complacent slaves. Though Glory’s intentions were to showcase the Black experiences of 54th regiment, but that ultimately failed once the experiences of the regime were shown primarily through White eyes. Even if the movie is from Shaw’s point-of-view to highlight his change of character from unfamiliarity to seeing himself as an equal with Black soldiers, there are other ways of portraying Shaw’s transformation without making him the star of the film.…

The movie Glory is shown through 5 different perspective: Robert Gould Shaw and his journey commanding the Fifty-fourth Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment during the civil war, Private Trip, Private Jupiter Sharts (a scared and aloof man), Corporal Thomas Searles (an educated man who grew up with Shaw) and Sgt. Maj. John Rawlins (a wise runaway slave). In the movie, initially all the African American men are treated brutally since they are indiscipline. Sergeant major Mulcahy helps teach these men discipline by making them go through hours of training and by whipping them. After witnessing the torture, Shaw learns to accept the men and convinces his commander through blackmail that they should be transferred to a combat command. When they finally are transferred, they are involved in their first real battle at James Island, but on the way there these African American soldiers are mocked by white Union soldiers who laugh at them since they are black. Shaw’s men prove themselves in battle and the white men who initially mocked them, bowed down to them in respect. Two days later the men march proudly under the command of Robert Gould Shaw to attack Fort Wagner, but unfortunately Shaw and most of the men (including the 4 African American characters) are killed.…
