When this happens, it shows the first example of the struggle between good and evil. Markheim gives in to his evil side and murders the man just so that he can rob the store. This evil side of him takes over his body and convinces him to murder the man in cold blood. Another example of the struggle between good and evil can be seen in the symbolism of the figure that appears to Markheim as he is about to rob the store. The figure tests Markheim on just how evil he is willing to be, and it makes him think about whether or not he really wants to commit these evil deeds without remorse (124-132). His conscience is trying to help him decide where he stands on this fight between good and evil, and it actually helps him decide which path he wants to take.
