Robert E. Lee was a battlefield commander who graduated from WestPoint academy and, became commander of the Virginia forces during the civil war. He was eventually became commander of the confederate forces during the civil war and won many of his battle the most famous of them being the second battle of bull run. Unfortunately, he surrendered the last major confederate force to union leader Ulysses S. Grant at the battle of Appomattox Court House.
January 31st 1865 Robert E. Lee was appointed commander and chief of the confederate troops. During the beginning of the war Robert E. Lee wanted to train slaves to fight for the confederate forces. He offered emancipation to any slave and there family whom fought for the war. The south never fully took on this idea and therefore had far less forces in total. This eventually led to the downfall of confederate.
Towards the end of the war when the south started to lose the civil war, Robert E. Lee demanded a march on northern territory. The battle that ensued from this march was the three day long battle of Gettysburg. Robert E. Lee met forces led by George G. Meade in south central Pennsylvania and began what became the bloodiest battle in American history. The body count totaled 51,000 men on both sides dead.
Although Lee was an intelligent commander he still lost a combined total of 230,000 southern soldiers. His biggest enemies were not the north but, hunger and disease. He lost more troops to wounds sustained on the battle field than men who died in battle.
Today Lee is remembered as a great southern leader and even in the north after his death he gained a lot of popularity for his logistics used during battles. "Gettysburg was the price the South paid for having Robert E. Lee as commander.”. The meaning of the battles that Robert E Lee fought in will not be forgotten. Today he is remembered alongside Ulysses S. grant, Jefferson Davis, and Abraham Lincoln.
