V. Summary: Against his parents’ wishes, sixteen-year-old Robinson Crusoe sets sail from Hull on a sea voyage. A storm wrecks their ship but this didn’t him from going out to sea again. This journey too, ends as the ship he was in was taken over by pirates. They were taken as prisoners aboard the pirate ship. A strong storm suddenly hit them. Everyone was on their knees, praying to be saved. A kindly pirate at last released them from their chains. The ship capsized. Most of the pirates and crew were sucked beneath the waves. Crusoe finally set foot on land and found out that there weren’t any other survivors from the storm besides himself. He fetches arms, tools and other supplies form the ship before it breaks apart and sinks. He set up his own camp on the beach for shelter. He was delighted to see the pirate leader’s dog, Rosie, during one night. He now had a companion on the island. He named the island he was in as Crusoe Island. He proceeds to build a fenced-in habitation near a cave which he excavates himself. He keeps a calendar by making marks in a wooden cross built by himself, hunts, grows corn and rice, dries grapes to make for the winter months, learns to make pottery, raises goats, etc., using tools created from stone and wood which he harvests on the island, and adopts a small parrot and named it Poll. He reads the Bible and becomes religious, thanking God for his fate in which nothing is missing but human society. He was walking down the beach when he felt uneasy. Then he saw something extraordinary and totally unexpected. There, planted firmly in the sand, was a human footprint! It was larger than his own foot, so it couldn’t have been his. Years later, he discovers native cannibals who occasionally visit the island to kill and eat prisoners. At first he plans to kill them for committing an abomination, but later realizes that he has no right to do so as the cannibals do not knowingly commit a crime. He dreams of obtaining one or two servants by freeing some prisoners; and indeed, when a prisoner manages to escape, Crusoe helps him, naming his new companion "Man Friday" after the day of the week he appeared. Crusoe then teaches him English and converts him to Christianity. After another party of natives arrives to partake in a cannibal feast, Crusoe and Friday manage to kill most of the natives and save two of the prisoners. One is Friday's father and the other is a Spaniard, Captain Nathan, who informs Crusoe that there are other Spaniards shipwrecked on the mainland. A plan is devised wherein the Spaniard would return with Friday's father to the mainland and bring back the others, build a ship, and sail to a Spanish port. Before the Spaniards return, an English ship appears; mutineers have taken control of the ship and intend to maroon their former captain on the island. Crusoe and the ship's captain strike a deal, in which he helps the captain and the loyalist sailors retake the ship from the mutineers, whereupon they intend to leave the worst of the mutineers on the island. Before they leave for England, Crusoe shows the former mutineers how he lived on the island, and states that there will be more men coming. Crusoe leaves the island December 19, 1686, and arrives back in England June 11, 1687. He learns his parents had died several years earlier but he found his sister alive. His sister told him that he had long been given up for dead by most people but his father never gave up hope. His father left a message on his deathbed and said that he had forgiven him for running away to sea. He left some money for him, too and used it to start a small shipping company with Captain Nathan and Friday. They bought a ship and named it Rosie after Crusoe’s dog and used it to trade in the Caribbean. The three of them became quite rich. Friday wanted to go back home to his mainland and Crusoe knew he would miss his company but agreed because it would make him feel happier. He visited Crusoe Island once more and hardly recognized the place. He voyaged back to England in under a month. And so, he grew richer and built a large house for himself, and soon after, he married and had a beautiful daughter and a son. His son grew into a fine, adventurous young lad and reminded him of himself in his younger days. It didn’t surprise him when he mostly spent his hours by the harbor in Hull. It was also no surprise to him when he told his mother and him that he wanted to leave home and sail the seven seas. He, of course, understood how he felt but took him aside and gave him a warning.

VI. Moral/Lesson: • We should work hard to make our lives better. • We should be grateful when someone does us a good deed. • We should be loyal and faithful to our friends. • We should be brave even when things are difficult or scary. • We should always have faith that God will be there for us. • We should always live peacefully with people of different races.

VII. Reaction: If I were Crusoe, I would have followed my father’s advice instead of being stubborn. I wouldn’t have to face all those horrifying events the way he did like being taken as a prisoner by a bunch of pirates, being caught by a huge wave and marooned on an island for several years with occasionally visiting cannibals. I would have been wealthy already with the office job I have in town. The people and my family wouldn’t have believed me dead and they would never have been worried sick of me. However, I like how the author wrote the story in a way that children would be inspired to work hard despite limited resources and that they will know how to treat a friend well by being kind and loyal to them. Most of all, having faith that God will always be there no matter how hard life is for us.
