A robot is defined as a mechanical or virtual intelligent agent that can perform most tasks automatically or with some guidance. A robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by a computer of some sort and an electronic programming. Many people think it is a machine that imitates a human—much like the androids in Star Wars, Terminator and Star Trek. People still haven 't been able to give a robot enough understanding to reliably interact with the world. The types of robots that you will encounter most frequently are the robots that will do work that is too dangerous, vigorous, or just plain nasty. They can be found in auto, medical, manufacturing and space industries. In fact, there are over a million of these types of robots working for us today. Robotics has other uses that can help people with everyday life. They have come a long way since Leonardo Da Vinci first drew up designs for robotic equipment in the 1400’s, and even earlier before that to the Chinese in an estimated time of 50 BC. However there is a fear in today’s society that advancement in robotics may lead to a dooms day scenario.
This has been lead on by movies and novels. People express fear about the robots taking over the world and killing all humans in the process. There is no reason why self-aware robots will develop to be evil and hate humanity. There is a good chance that the robots may decide to help humans. Along with becoming self-aware, they may also become sympathetic to us. On the other hand, the theories are split even throughout researchers that we will only take a matter of time to either build machines to help advance our race or that we are only counting down the day till we destroy ourselves with that which we have created.
Many technological advances have a scary side to them, pointing towards a future that has a possibility where humanity is in danger of being overrun by intelligent machines which would no longer have a need for us. If they ever decided that they don’t want us around then we’re done for. In one dooms day scenario, explored in countless movies and TV shows over the years, I wouldn’t bet against flying machines to be the primary way of being attacked, but at the same time we use these machines in tactical warfare. UAV’s (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) have been numerously used in warfare and have saved lives countless times. Places, like Afghanistan, with rugged terrain are a perfect use for the UAV’s. The issues are that using the UAV’s is causing you to look through a computer monitor, and that takes out the human factor from war. It is thought of to be similar to someone who is playing a video game, and so there for you are more likely to make a fatal choice. There are plenty of instances where a UAV has fired into a crowd of people instead of a group of militants. If we were to put an Artificial Intelligence, which is being heavily sought after, into one of these pieces of equipment, then there is the issue of the robot taking its own orders and firing at targets that are not militant like.
Researchers in the computer science field disagree on the road ahead for robotics. They say our relationship with machines probably will be a joint and friendly one, not murderous or chaotic. Yet there are a number of scenarios that could lead to robots aiming to exterminate us. There is technology that already exists to build a system that will destroy the whole world, intentionally or unintentionally, if it just detects the right conditions. The continued progress in artificial intelligence research will possibly lead to machines that are as smart as humans are in the next hundred years. Our advanced civilization will reach a point where there is enough intelligence that we can understand how our own brain works, and then we will build synthetic versions of ourselves.
Robotics is used in many places throughout everyday life. There are many plants and facilities that use robotics to increase production as robots do not feel tired, need sleep, take breaks, and cost less than human labor. New innovations have made robotic limbs with machine intelligence possible for the first time. These robotic prostheses can sense their environment and predict a person’s intentions. Complex algorithms allow the device to more closely move with the behavior of natural limbs, even allowing users to control robotic arms and legs with their brains. After years of work with primates and able-bodied humans, we have successfully had the use of an implanted electrode in the brain that can successfully control the movement of a robot arm, allowing the patients to drink and perform other functions for the first time since they were first disabled. These are just some examples of how robotics is of a vital use for today’s people. In the future they will be more and more sophisticated to the point where you would not even be able to tell that a person has any robotic prosthesis.
There might even be a new arms race of robotic systems that could result in one side running rampant. In the case of there being warfare, by definition, the enemy side has no control of the robots that are trying to kill them. For example, Skynet of the movie The Terminator, the manufactured might turn against the manufacturers. There might be an innocuous situation of over dependency on robots that very well could spiral out of control. Suppose there is a factory that makes robots and it is not following human commands, so an order is issued to shut off power to the factory, but unfortunately, there are robots that happen to manage the only power station and they refuse to obey any commands. Then there might be a command that is issued by mankind to stop the trucks from delivering all the necessary materials to the factory, but then the drivers are robots and they also refuse. With a bit of wisdom, we could prevent humankind from falling into the traps dreamed up by all the Hollywood screenwriters. The problem is that the profit motive at companies has certainly engendered more automation, and the Cold War 's predication on the threat of mutually assured destruction points out that rationality does not always win.
Currently we have a threat today that the internet will crash for millions of people due to a virus that has a part of Artificial Intelligence to it. The lingering effect of an online advertising scam is affecting the internet for millions. The problem began when hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of infected computers around the world. The government set up a safety net protocol months ago using government computers, but that system will shut down on July 9. At that point, all of the infected users will not be able to connect to the Internet anymore. People are worried about issues like this arising when we have become more advanced with development of Artificial Intelligence in the future.
With Artificial Intelligence being developed, we have been able to accomplish many things that we were once not able to. Cars and airplanes also rely on Artificial Intelligence in order to ease the driving or flying experience. Braking systems in cars and fly-by-wire controls on airplanes use a computer in order to interpret the orders given by the driver or pilot to the breaking pedal or the control wheel or joystick. Google, Pandora, Amazon, eBay, and many more internet sites use Artificial Intelligence to help with the users search preferences, music choices, and even with suggestions on things you might like. It has even been used in a wide range of fields including medical diagnosis, stock trading, robot control, law, scientific discovery and toys. In fact we use Artificial Intelligence in the majority of our everyday lives without the realization of it. As robots become more advanced, then eventually there may be a set standard for a computer operating systems designed solely for robots. The fact of someone being afraid of Artificial Intelligence in today’s society is nearly obscured and doesn’t make sense.
With all of the uses of robotics having been brought out, it is clear to see that the use of robotics in today’s society is more than just helpful and needs to be pursued more heavily. Through the building of embodied machines, we have learned so much about the body and so much about our capabilities. People see robots as something to fear because they are potentially threatening to our future and to our superiority as a species, but at the same time they have proved time and time again that they can do the near impossible.
I have discovered that robotics and Artificial Intelligence are in more use with today’s society than I had once thought possible and I think that hopefully in a few years mankind will develop robotics to a point that it will not dominate nor overpower its own creator. The more research I have done into this subject, the more I learned that artificial intelligence coincides hand in hand with robotics as well. This was just a lot of useful information about robotics out there, more than what the public seems to know, I believe we need to draw a boundary between humans and machines such that we can prevent any kind of doomsday scenarios. Robotics has an amazing and bright future ahead of it, as well as we do with the developments that are up and coming with robotics and its counterpart of Artificial Intelligence. Believe me that we should not fear Robotics, but embrace its future. There are no worries for fear of robotics, except for the fear of the unknown. With this there will not be any reprisal or backlash from the devices that we create, but instead a future full of the unimaginable. Only the future can tell us what is next!
