In the 1950s, David Green, Jewish football star, lives in the economically diminishing town of Scranton, Pennsylvania. For his senior year of high school, David is given a scholarship to St. Matthew’s, an elite Catholic prep school located in Massachusetts. When he arrives, he meets all of his teammates, a few that he forms a bond with, Charlie Dillon, Rip Van Kelt, Jack Connors, and his roommate Chris Reece. David Green then learns about St. Matthews’ cherished honor code system, which stands by; Honor, Respect, and Accountability. It was a living entity, a guideline the school swore by, and those that broke the code met with the headmaster to discuss consequences. Soon learning that his friends are very prejudiced towards Jews, as they…
On all accounts, the Bob Jones Marching band is best known for it’s musical excellence, and Friday night halftime entertainment.…
The end of World War two started the conformity and a conservative mindset in the American people. The majority of young people's goals in life were to marry, move to suburbs, and be financially successful. The beat generation had a different idea, they were a young group of men who were against the "American dream" that the rest of society so strongly desired. These men were Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, and Neal Cassidy. They were a group of "struggling writers, students, hustlers, and drug addicts" (Foster 11) better known as the "beats”, and they were the founding fathers of the beat generation.…
Little Rock Nine one of the best and most influential moments in the Civil Rights history. The Little Rock Nine journey is about a group of students who attended Little Rock Central High an all white school, when they attended that school it got worse for them. Everyday getting to school was a struggle for them. White people spit at them, said racial slurs and threw stuff at them, and eventually the president sent in soldiers to escort them safely to school. They closed the Public High schools down all Carlotta wanted to do was to get her education. The media got involved, Carlota spoke at schools, churches, etc about her story. During the integration of Little Rock Central High school in 1957, the media illuminate certain events but painted…
I selected “I am Offering This Poem,” Ode to My Socks,” and “Bonny Barbara Allan” for all having a common theme. I also selected “All of Me” by John Legend, “The Gift” by Jim Brickman, and “Don’t Let Me Down” by the Chainsmokers. The common theme of all of these is love. Love is an intense feeling of deep affection, and all three of these poems, and songs contain the definition of love.…
Drew Barrymore, one of the famous Hollywood actresses, once said “I want people to be blown away when I do what they don't expect. “, and she is not the only one who feels that way. I think a lot of people had have the same experience in their life. We never know what other people expect from us; however, our emotional state takes a role in the path of success when the outcome of our work goes above and beyond people imagination. We are able to blow away all those skeptical people around us, and the feeling of triumph gives us the power to go ahead and demonstrate to everybody that we can make the impossible possible. In the chapter, ”They Just Blew Me Away”, from The Last Lecture, the author, Professor Randy Pausch, discusses the amazing experience what he had with his students from Carnegie Mellon University and how he felt when his students blew him away. I, too, have had the experience of blowing away my computer programming teacher. These examples are important for all of those who strive to do their best. This essay will discuss how far people can go when they are motivated to do better and how the sentiment of blowing somebody away gives them the power to accomplish the desired result.…
In comparing the Beatles song “In My Life” and “the Embrace” by Mark Doty, they are both written with so much emotion. The tone is sad and somewhat hopeful. The main theme in the song and in the poem is their love. They both talk about losing a loved one. When reading the poem and song to some extent everyone can understand or relate to the situations. Some are hopeful to have just a brief moment with their loved one, whether it is a dream or just reminiscing about the places and memories of them. Even though the two are three decades apart the message is the same. A lost love is irreplaceable and indelible. Love of any kind holds on persons heart and emotion. Both writers display a lot of emotion. The love that they speak of is a pure image of love. In both the song and poem it talks about love and loss. In both it is hard for the writer to remember their loved ones. They may even feel guilty for forgetting memories or certain features of this person or objects. But like a dream or a certain song those memories of that person or object will always bring you back to the day you were with that…
My most listened to song is Alex Days and Carrie Hope Fletcher’s rendition of Faith Hill’s “This Kiss”. It tells of a story about two people who fall in love. Before they found each other, they were hurt by previous relationships but when they meet, they spark an indescribable romance. Throughout the song, they symbolize their love by their kiss. This song does support my values of commitment, happiness, and love.…
One of the many conservative shows, Fox’s King of the Hill demonstrated to be a primetime animated success that displayed a traditional core, Christian family in Texas. Co-created by Mike Judge, King of the Hill revolved around life in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. Hank Hill was a reasonable, old-fashioned father who took care of his son Bobby Hill and his wife Peggy Hill. Every week it was Hank, who would collectedly handle difficult neighbors and the challenges of raising a son who would confused him at times, while attempting to stay true to his values. The Hills’ values are part of their personalities, which are questioned or ridiculed. King of the Hill showed the exaltation of conservative not necessarily just in Texas but as a nation, by showcasing the resistance of change against liberalism.…
The Rolling Stones are a British rock and roll band who rose to prominence during the mid-1960s. The band was named after a song by Muddy Waters, a leading exponent of hard-rocking blues. In their music, The Rolling Stones were the embodiment of the idea of importing blues style into popular music. Their first recordings were covers or imitations of rhythm and blues music, but they soon greatly extended the reach of their lyrics and playing, but rarely, if ever, lost their basic blues feel. The band came into being in 1961 when former school friends Jagger and Richards met Brian Jones. They named themselves after a song by Muddy Waters, a popular choice of name —at least two other bands are believed to have called themselves The Rolling Stones…
“The greatest Music comes from an emotional identification with those that do not have.”- Musician Brandford Marsalis. In this quote Marsalis is stating that Music is supposed to be familiar to people in the same emotional situation. Singing about being broken when you have money does not benefit your audience. The audience want to hear artists that are in the same situation that there in. When artists from the late 1900s wrote their music, they included more about the experience and emotional background that their image or current surroundings. Emotions that was sincere instead of being counterfeit. In order to sing about a love, that person would have been in or currently in love. “The fact that we ignore the very thing that made the song, which is heart, the feeling we are missing so much today” – Musician Les Paul.…
The song “Wings” by Macklemore is about trying to fit in with society’s definition of “cool” even though it means going against personal beliefs or personal opinions about how someone should dress or talk. Throughout the song, Macklemore talks about a pair of Nike sneakers that he bought when he was a kid. At the beginning of the song Macklemore is convinced that because he has these new shoes he will finally be considered “cool,” but by the end of the song, he realizes that they are only just a pair of shoes and society makes them out to be much more than they really are.…
Not very many songs compare to Bob Dylan's timeless "Like A Rolling Stone". He explores areas that most conventional lyricists and composers do not touch. Bob tells us many of life's lessons in a mere six minutes and nine seconds. The divine Bob describes life before and after the fall from fame and fortune by telling the stories of multiple persons, speaking to them in conversation. The theme of this song is loss, whether is it loss of social status, money, or trust for humanity.…
The abstract idea of the use of Little Rock in the song was to highlight the crisis taking place in 1957, when a group of young African- American students (as known as the Little Rock 9), were denied and prevented from entering a segregated high school. This event actually happened 3 years after the Brown v. Education, which was a Supreme Court case that ruled segregation in public school systems unconstitutional. Ole Miss was a similar case of the Little Rock 9, where James Meredith became the first African- American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi, which resulted in a riot between Southern segregationists and government officials. These two topics relate to each other because they both featured a moment of violation of the constitution, which stated segregation situations like the ones stated in the lyrics of the song are unconstitutional. The conflicts both have had government actions taken to reassure the historical African-American students were going to go further than what they came for. These topics relate to U.S history due to the fact that these events triggered a new evolution of equality among race, resulting in boycotts, powerful speeches, and much more that involved the movement of the American soil. These events both came to symbolize both massive resistance to social change and the government’s commitment to enforcing African-American civil…
