Statement of Purpose Four years of undergraduate studies (B.E.) in Mechanical Engineering atxxxxx gave me a good amount of knowledge of theoretical aspects of Industrial Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing Systems. In this area Robotics has acquired a distinct presence not only in manufacturing processes but has extended its use to mining, space exploration and other applications where human safety is a considerably important factor. My aim in doing MS in Mechanical Engineering with special reference to Robotics is on account of the vast scope for advancements in the field.
I developed interest in this area when I participated in a robotics competition held at IIT, Bombay. The statement was designing a robot to climb up from a pit, jump on another side and escape by opening the gate. Later we tried to construct a small vehicle which could build up its own bridge, cross it and also fold it back.
In the final year, our team completed a project titled ‘Development of Micro hydro Power-plant’. The aim was to develop power from low head water (thereby eliminating the need of dams). This idea originated from simple tap water filter with a small fan fitted inside it. For this college project, our objective was to charge a small car battery from the output energy generated by the scaled down model of Micro Hydro Power-plant. The project consisted of the designing the turbine, its hub, the shaft (on which turbine will be mounted) and also a draft tube (to avoid the negative pressure build up) and bearings. Since I was responsible for the design of the turbine blades and hub. We checked reliability of turbine blades by stress-strain analysis of the blades by ProE-Mechanica. I helped in designing the shaft and bearings (by ASME code) for mounting and smooth running of turbine. We tested for various positions of turbine and got maximum efficiency in a vertical tubular turbine. On a scaled model, we could get power output of 12W
