What is life for human beings ? Is a life of mere existence worth living? Is that what we want? Or do we want to be just like McCandless and actually live life to the fullest by taking chances to discover our deeper selves. I'm not saying we should all go do something that we want to and go die. What I'm saying is that life is…
In the biographical interview, Roger Ebert: The Essential Man, Chris Jones who writes for Esquire Magazine, asserts that although Roger Ebert has went through a lot in his life it is good to focus on the positive that comes out of every situation no matter how much emotional or physical trauma it may have on you as well as stating that life should never be underappreciated and we should always be content because we may never know when our time comes. He supports this claim by first explaining and analyzing Ebert’s medical situation from hospital visits to final diagnosis and the side effects that have come with the jaw cancer. Then, he goes on to explain how Ebert has to come to value life in a different way than most people due to his unique situation and how his wife has learned to sort of “deal” with the state at hand. Toward the end of the text he agreeably summarizes Ebert’s current life by showing us examples of how Ebert lived his life from a day to day basis including the things that are secondhand to us but difficult for him. Jones’ purpose is to convey to us that we need to value life then we do now in order to show us that no matter how difficult or problematic some things may seem, we can overcome them and fight against them. He establishes a very reassuring tone for others who may be going through a tough time in their life and to their loved ones to better understand how to asses a serious situation.…

“If you don’t speak up, people will take advantage of you”(Simon 43). This quote is the best definition of what life really is. In life if you do not speak for yourself, people will push you around and take advantage of you. If you want something done right in this world, you have to do it yourself. Depending on others is what others want, but that dependency will take over your life and it will become something that is not yours anymore.…

Jones develops this information with the flashback of Ebert’s usual life as a movie critique, his life while fighting cancer, and then his values near death. Chris Jones's purpose is to inform in order for us to understand how Ebert’s hardships during his cancer allowed him to value life. Jones uses an empathetic tone with his caring audience who has lost loved ones.…
Nothing about life is easy; you work, you try, and sometimes you fail regardless of your efforts. Some people believe in reincarnation, others in some form of an afterlife, and some believe you only have one life. Believing that you’re only able to live one life could benefit the person because they take that idea and they accept it. In that acceptance they choose to live everyday as if it were there last, so that by their last breath they can say they had a good life, even with the many struggles and heartache. Most people live with the belief that we only have one life; although life is a gift with endless possibilities, it's…
People often question how life should be measured. Value is something which each individual assigns to their life depending on how much meaning it has to themselves and others. Life cannot be determined by using the calculator or put a price tag on. As long as people enjoy and accept what they have or do something that is good for the community, their lives are valuable. Furthermore, being loving the job that one do can lead to many inventions and the value of life should be measured by one’s profession. However, it is difficult to evaluate the value of life since there are so many factors that contributes to a person’s like due to his or her conditions.…
Everyone has their own story to tell, but some actually do tell it while others keep it a secret. Some people may think that they know me, but really all they know is my name. What does life mean to me? To me life is about trusting our feelings and taking chances, losing and finding happiness, appreciating the memories and learning from the past. It’s not what I have been through in my life that defines who I am, it’s how I got through it that makes me the person than I am today.…
My view on the value of a human life is very similar to Roger Ebert’s value of his own…
Consider this question. Are you reading this right now? The fact that someone can read what I am writing about is something to be valued. It is a blessing to be and to read of write or type. It shows a level of knowledge and education that a lot of people in this world might not have. Furthermore, Roger Ebert writes in an interview, “When I am writing, my problems become invisible and I am the same person I always was. All is well. I am as I should be” (Jones 4). Roger Ebert was a journalist and movie critic who was diagnosed with cancer and then lost his jaw and his ability to speak. Even though he is sick and dying, the simple quality of being able to still write like he had before made his life valuable. Lastly, the very fact that you are alive and breathing shows that your life has value. Being able to live another day and breathe clean air is valuable. Life in itself is very valuable. If someone is ever wondering if they have value or if they are worth anything, just consider the fact that you woke up to live another day. That has to mean something! For fate to grant you another day means you are…
The simple answer is simply this: the meaning of life is whatever we choose it to be. One person may choose to provide food and shelter for oneself, for a family or for total strangers. Another person may choose to provide inspiration and guidance to others, or to accumulate wealth, and yet another person may choose, on a moment to moment basis, that which brings peace and happiness to oneself. This decision in what makes your life meaningful is something each one of us makes for ourselves and it is always open to change. It becomes the basis for many other decisions that we make on a day to day basis. If we decide the…
We already answered why death should mean nothing to us. But, why life? I am sure it has been said before, but life can be a real bitch. It is hard work to navigate life, and people do not always make it. I could list out the moments of ecstasy, but it is not those fleeting moments that help me feel better when I am at my worst. It is in search of those moments that my Stepfather slowly poisoned himself. Cyrenaic hedonism is not the solution to despair. Stoicism has, on occasion, helped me not give into despair, but it is only a way to push it to the edges. These philosophies are missing something vital, which is…
People have different perspectives on how is life worth living. For me, there are many things that make my life worth living. Life offers many challenges but through the love that I receive from my family and friends I become strong enough to face them. Love that I can receive as I live is what makes my life worth living. The opportunity to receive and share it to others really makes my life worth living. Happy moments that I spend with my loved ones also make my life worth living. They help me create good memories as I continuously live. Another one is the chance to improve myself as an individual and to have a purpose on other’s life. As I explore my potentialities, it’s worth living to have an impact on other’s life. It’s like knowing that if I leave this world, I’ll be remember by those people which I have left an impact. And life is worth living because it lets us experience failures and attain success. Failures strengthen us to face the struggles and obstacles that we will encounter while success makes room for more improvement to be an individual worthy to be called as successful.…
