Roger Waters Narrative
During the summer I received an email from my dance teacher, the subject read, “Exciting Opportunity!” I predicted that the exciting opportunity would have something to do with a small outreach performance. When I opened up the email and saw that four dancers had the opportunity to perform with Roger Waters, I shrugged and turned off my phone. When my mom opened the email that said four dancers had the opportunity to perform with Roger Waters she was completely dumbfounded. During my dance class the next day I consulted with my friends to see who was going to participate in the concert. My friend Serafina with, “ Of course I am doing the show Roger Waters is awesome.”
On the drive home I asked my dad who Roger Waters was, he began to explain

My dad and I arrived at the BMO Harris Bradley Center with four hours until the show began. When arrived at the center we were met by my friends Serafina, Serena, and Katrina. They were the other people who were chosen to perform. As soon as we were all there we were immediately escorted backstage to a space behind the stage that was being used as a makeshift green room. When we arrived in the green room we were immediately fitted for orange jumpsuits and oversized black ,”RESIST,” shirts by a lady named Katie. Katie then began to explain the plan to us and a group of children from the School of Rock who would also be performing with us. We would learn the dance, go through soundcheck, eat dinner, watch a part of the show, and then finally perform. We learned the surprisingly simple dance in a short amount of time, the dance consisted of step-clapping, marching, ripping off our jumpsuits to reveal our black shirt, and freestyle dancing. Everyone felt the most self conscious about freestyle dancing, we didn’t really know what to do. Katie saw that this was an issue and said, “ Roger just wants you guys to have fun and really get into the music, the crazier the better, and if you don’t know what to do get as much space as you can between your feet and the ground.” After hearing that we could just jump we all felt a little

In his speech This is Water David Foster Wallace during a commencement ceremony begins discussing the purpose of education, not only to become intellectually educated but to learn how to think. He introduces a metaphor of two fishes that after being asked how the water was, they wondered what water is, being water all the actual and commonly dismissed reality that surrounds us. Thus, it has led us to create a natural default setting that has caused individuals to become centralized in their individual/personal needs only, and that our needs are sometimes put over more relevant matters to fulfill our necessities first. He states that knowing how to think is to be capable to decide what things we pay attention to and what we learn from experience.…

Wallace, David Foster. "This is Water." Kenyon college commencement speech. May 21, 2005. Wallace's speech gives a look at reality. The way an American adult's life is. The way how everything is routine, how if not "well adjusted," you will be self centered and in default setting. He describes the daily routine of an American adult, and how he goes to a supermarket, packed with more people. He gets frustrated and annoyed by all of these people; how they are just wasting his time. He then starts thinking how all of these people are going through the same thing he is going through; they have rough days just as he does. If someone was to think outside the box and actually focus on the beauty of this world, they will not be bored, annoyed, frustrated,…

According to the article by David Foster Wallace, “In His Own Words” the “most obvious important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about.” Wallace argues that a liberal arts education gives you human value instead of just materialistic reward; therefore it not only fills you up with knowledge but “teaches you how to think”. Not the actual capacity to think, but your ability to make choices of what to think about.…

Brain fart. I practiced that small thirty-second choreography over and over until it became muscle memory. I could have sworn I knew it so well I could perform in my sleep, but as soon as I met the intimidating gaze of my judge, I froze. When they taught the choreography during class a few hours prior, I felt no pressure and memorized every move with utmost precision. Any possible mistake I made would have been concealed by the other fifty dancers in the room. But right at a crucial moment during my audition for a local hip-hop dance team, I couldn't remember what the next move was. Any mistake I made this time would be painfully obvious and I would have no way to hide. Thirty seconds was all I had to prove myself worthy material for this…

I honestly believed we would be the only people that would be dancing, but I was proved to be wrong. About 20 minutes into the tour, the DJ began to play the cupid shuffle and my friends and I were the first passengers to rush to the dance floor. As I looked around the room, I saw couples that appeared to be around 80 years old dancing, I saw Korean women get up and dance, I also noticed someone who looked like they would rather be somewhere else get up, smile and dance. About a year and a half later, my high school music department decided to go on a trip to New Jersey and Pennsylvania to compete in “Music in the Parks” at the Six Flags in New Jersey. On this trip, we also went on a party boat cruise and by the time we got to the tour, we were all tired and hungry from travelling and playing music most of the day. When we got on the ship, there were many people from different countries. It appeared as though there was more of a diverse group of people than on the Washington D.C. cruise, because there were about 40%…

My cheer team, Spirit Celebration, practiced almost every night for the last month and could practically perform our routine in our sleep. This competition is what we prepared for all season. As our team gathers together, we stretch listening to our music over and over reviewing the routine in our minds. As we walk to the practice gym we glance at the other teams and laugh when they mess up. We performed our routine on the warm up mat perfectly. Walking to the on-deck area, we talk among ourselves with not a worry in the world. As we stand on deck we prayed not only to hit a clean routine but to have fun and that no would one get hurt. The emcee announces, “Performing now from Richardson, Texas, Spirit Celebration”, and it’s time to compete. The lights are bright and I can see nothing beyond the blue performance mat but black spots. The music starts and the crowd goes wild blowing air horns, banging wooden blocks together and trying to make as much noise as possible…

As European settlers moved westward across the continent, they gravitated toward these springs of warmth and vitality. In 1807, the first European to visit the Yellowstone area, John Colter, probably encountered hot springs, leading to the designation "Colter's Hell." Also in 1807, settlers founded the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where, in 1830, Asa Thompson charged one dollar each for the use of three spring-fed baths in a wooden tub, and the first known commercial use of geothermal energy occurred.…

This semester I chose to attend to a Martha Redbone concert and to my surprise I really enjoyed it. Not only was her performance great but it also opened me up to a whole new realm of music that I had never heard before. Being a guitarist, I listen to more rock than anything so you can only imagine my reaction when Martha Redbone, a practitioner of Native American rhythmical music began to play. Although, it wasn’t what I typically listened to, it completely blew me away. Not only was I intrigued by her captivating vocal performance but also the band backing her up was nothing less than phenomenal. Every member sang harmonies and appeared to be effortlessly playing through some of the most complicated rhythms I have ever heard. What I also particularly enjoyed was her ability to connect with the audience. During her performance she began to talk about environmental issues that were arising near where she used to live. This I thought was important to the show because it allowed the audience to have insight to who she really and how her morals are portrayed through the music she writes.…
