Rogue Waves Compare And Contrast
Gigantic waves are merciless demons of the sea. Rogue waves and tsunamis are natural disasters that can destroy and wreck the world around you. However, they can be prepared in advance, but they are still very deadly. Rogue waves and tsunamis seem very alike, but when diving deep into the information about them, one can see just how different they are. Rogue waves have a distinct look and happen in different ways. First, huge freak waves, such as rogue waves, are waves that can suddenly appear out of thin air. The text states, “The surrounding sea can appear calm when suddenly a wave as high as 100 feet above the ocean’s surface comes crashing towards you” (Simmons 58). This illustrates that one humongous wall of water jets up into the air, …show more content…
According to the text, “These strong winds push in the opposite direction against an ocean current, and the collision of the two can create large surface waves.” (Simmons 60) This matters because when currents collide they make the waves on the surface much larger. Wind strength also plays a key role in the making of the bigger waves. In conclusion, rogue waves are unique waves that shoot up in the deepest part of the oceans. Tsunamis are a series of large waves that are formed by earthquakes deep underground in the ocean. In the beginning, when tsunamis are formed, they move fast and start to accelerate as they get closer to the shore. According to the text, “These waves can move quickly and for very long distances. Some tsunamis have been known to travel for thousands of miles across the ocean and travel at speeds of up to 500 miles per hour” (Ducksters 1). Since the waves move at rapid speeds and are hard to see, they can cause a lot of damage and can possibly harm people. Also, there are not many warning systems, so you have to be very careful. Secondly, most tsunamis are started by large movements under the water. The text states, “Most tsunamis are caused by

When talking of the origin of tsunamis and hurricanes, they are formed by two different forces. Hurricanes are formed over warm ocean waters during warm months. They draw heat from warm, moist ocean air and release it through condensation of water vapor in thunderstorms. As opposed to hurricanes, tsunamis are caused by volcanic explosions, landslides and other underwater explosions. Any type of disturbance above or below the water can possibly cause a tsunami.…

Purpose: To investigate tsunamis Introduction:I have always been fascinated by tsunamis. I have to say that when I vacationed in Hawaii and snorkeled in the Pacific Ocean, I did give a fleeting thought to tsunamis. In the last activity, I mentioned that the characteristics and behaviors of waves that you learned from the video could be applied to other waves. As you complete this activity, I want you to think about the similarities between the rogue tsunamis and the common waves we have studied.Materials:none Procedure: 1. Answer the question based on your exploration on the tsunami website. 2. Submit the assignment according to the directions below.…

According to scientists, a tsunami can be caused when there is a large displacement of water. Based on the article, “Tsunamis are caused by landslides, volcanoes, or earthquakes that occur on the ocean floor” (Simmons 61). A tsunami could be caused deep underwater from an earthquake or the rumble of a volcano, and even from the effect of a landslide. Finally, tsunamis are a bunch of enormous waves caused by natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and even meteorites. Rogue waves and tsunamis share many causes and effects, but both are unalike in many…

These huge waves are called rogue waves—or monster or freak waves—and can be encountered during bad weather storms or even in calm seas, but the fundamental aspect is that they appear with little warning. The biggest problem is the lack of scientific data from shipboard measurements of such waves because of their propensity to appear quickly and without warning. Rogue waves can also disappear as quickly as they form. Scientists have been studying the formation and characteristics of rogue waves with the goal of creating an accurate prediction and detection method to mitigate the potential damage of these waves.…

    1) Oceanic waves mean the forward movements of the ocean’s water caused by oscillation of water particles by frictional drag of wind over the Earth’s surface. It can be caused by the movement of Earth’s crust aka an earthquake. Like every wave, oceanic waves have highest and lowest points. The peak of thewave is called crest while the lowest point is called trough. The wavelength is the horizontal distance between two troughs or crests.…

The characteristics of tsunamis differ slightly from normal sea waves. For one, they often have extremely long wave lengths, in deep water an initial wavelength can be up to 100km. Their amplitude contrasts with the length and it is often nearly undetectable, especially in open ocean. When they are first triggered they have been recorded to travel at speeds of up to 600kmph. Once tsunamis reach the shore they first appear as a rapidly receding shore line. When they reach shallow water they slow down, increase rapidly in height and decrease in wave length. Friction and turbulence slow the wave even more. They will continue to travel until all energy has completely dissipated. Often this doesn’t happen until several hundred feet inland, the flow back can also be extremely destructive. Tsunamis also pose one extra threat, they will sometimes last several hours with the first wave being followed by a chain of waves.…

This is caused by shallow-focus underwater earthquake; volcanic eruption and large land slide into the sea. The displacement of the water becomes the giant sea wave and they normally have a long wavelength over 100m and low wave height when they are still in the open ocean. When it approaches shallower water near the shoreline the speed and the height increases and it can reach 700km/h. tsunami is one of the most deadly seismic hazards can cause significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. On March 11, 2011, a magnitude-9 earthquake shook northeastern Japan, unleashing a savage tsunami. It killed over 15000 people and the total cost of the disaster was over $300billion and Japan is still recovering today.…

The first of these occurred in the Indian Ocean Tsunami on December 26, 2004. According to the U.S. Geologic Survey, that tsunami was caused by a megathrust earthquake on “on the interface of the India and Burma plates and was cause by the release of stresses that develop as the India plate subducts beneath the overriding Burma plate” (USGS). National Geographic reported that the magnitude 9.0 earthquake generated as much energy as “23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs” (NatGeo). This tectonic event caused tsunami waves that traveled thousands of miles, impacted 11 countries on the Indian Ocean and killed more than 250,000 people. One of the primary contributors to the tsunami death toll was a complete lack of any tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean. In an article written shortly after the tsunami Waverly Person from the U.S. Geology Survey explained that, in addition to the lack of any sort of warning systems was the inexperience of the inhabitants in the affected countries which caused the staggering death toll. The inhabitants had never learned any of the warning signs, like a swiftly receding shoreline, because Indian Ocean tsunamis are very rare. In the years that have…

Thesis: Earthquakes have been a natural part of Earth for many years and are caused by a shift in the Earth’s tectonic plates. Tectonic plates shift when two separated pieces of Earth’s crust push together because of the pressure of the hot air below them pushing up on the plates from the heat of the Earth’s core. This pressure must be released somehow, so when the pressure becomes too great for the plates to withstand, one part of a plate gives way to the pressure by rising above the other part of the tectonic plate. This then causes the top plate to overlap and collide with the other plate. This collision causes a massive shake on Earth, which we know most commonly as an earthquake, or seismic activity. When tectonic plates that are not submerged underwater shift, it causes an earthquake on land. When tectonic plates that are submerged underwater by a large lake or an ocean shift, it creates a tsunami. These two reactions can cause different sizes of disaster. The sum of the damage created by an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale, where a 1.0 earthquake has done the least amount of damage, and a 10.0 earthquake has done the most amount of damage. A 10.0 earthquake has never been recorded, as according to http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Whatareearthquakesmeasuredby . The sum of the damage done by a tsunami is measured by a TSUNAMETER, which was developed by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, as according to http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Howcantsunamisbemeasured&altQ=Whataretsunamismeasuredby&isLookUp=1#Q=what%20are%20tsunamis%20measured%20by . Tsunamis are ranked on a scale of 1.0 to 10.0, just like earthquakes. According to http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Whatisthescalefortsunamis , though, a tsunami can only be caused by a 6.5 seismic movement on the Richter scale. My goal in writing this report is to conclude if we should or should not geothermal drill into the Earth to receive power to our power grids.…
