Prior to 1954, the Holland Marsh went through various stages of change. Before the 1900’s, the Marsh was a source of food for aboriginals and european settlers who would also fish and hunt. In the early 1900’s, talks about draining the Holland Marsh for agriculture use began to arise. Eventually construction began in 1925 and a canal system was created to divert the Holland River.…

Hrafnkel, in the eponymous Hrafnkel’s Saga, by modern standards would certainly be considered a ruthless murderer. However, it is necessary to take into consideration the time period and culture of this historic Scandinavian saga. The entirety of the Icelandic population was illiterate and as such the justice system established in 10th century Iceland was based mostly on a system of honor and violence. The laws of Iceland were not actually written down, but rather kept alive verbally. An oral oath was considered to be a legally binding contract. This system was a weak attempt at avoiding bloody feuds and altercations among the common people, amidst a governing system of honor and trust. Hrafnkel, the protagonist of Hrafnkel’s Saga, demonstrated this skewed justice system by asserting himself as a Chieftain and bringing wrath upon his enemies or anybody who crossed his word. Thus, when Einar broke his oral agreement with Hrafnkel, Einar essentially broke a legally binding contract and was consequently subject to the full penalty of their agreement. Therefore, Hrafnkel, who agreed to kill anybody who rode his beloved horse, Freyfaxi, was then not guilty in committing murder as he was not breaking any Icelandic laws and was simply committing to his contract with Einar.…

The video we saw during class was interesting and it caught my attention since I can relate to what was being said. There was talk about Hispanic Americans and how each generation lived differently. But the main thing I took from the video was the idea of America being an international country; a nation of immigrants. However we must be careful to not assimilate into the masses to the point where we completely forget our heritage. It is our very heritage and culture which contribute to the country which makes our nation an international nation.…

The mythology about rubies is vast and it varies. Some cultures associate it with the Zodiac sign of Capricorn (goat) and in other cultures, Taurus (bull). Most cultures consider the ruby as the birthstone for July. However, throughout the ages it has been associated with nearly every other month. Ruby's Day is Tuesday, it's season Summer, and it's apostle St. Matthew. Rubies are a traditional gift for 40th wedding anniversaries. In myth and magic, at the time of the Borgias (15-16th century), rubies were thought to counteract poison- and were therefore in high demand! I usually try Yoga stretching before I go to sleep. I do it at home, once or twice a week depending on the mood I carry. I mostly do it when I had a tiring day or a lot of stuff going on. I sit down on a mat, close my eyes and begin the relaxation procedure. I try to stretch my whole body, starting from my legs and I work my way up. Most of the time I’m there for about 10 to 15 minutes. I tend to do it right after my shower because the shower itself is what starts relaxing my body. After my shower, I feel fresh and full of energy again. In my personal opinion doing Yoga stretching after a shower has led me to maximum results out of it. I tend to sleep better and wake up feeling even better. It’s just as if my whole body comes back to life and I just forget about what a bad day I had and start thinking that tomorrow will be a better day. I love how this technique makes you feel in a state of peace and relaxation. When they first told me about it I never believed it actually worked until I started trying it. It’s actually a stress reliever that doesn’t involve actual action like sports or the gym. For me playing soccer, running, and going to the gym is another way of forgetting about everything and getting relived but it involves me sweating and actually putting effort on it. I then tried Yoga stretching and I get similar results in reducing my stress. I will certainly keep doing it over and over again because I can do it at any convenient time, it relaxes me, and it doesn’t involve me doing much hard work. Most important why I will keep doing it, because it’s like a sleep aid for me. It helps me get better sleep and better rest. For me not getting sleep is a bad thing, I’m just one of those persons who needs their sleep. The only thing I would change about this it would be to start doing it more often to the point where I do it every day so I can start seeing even better results. I want to one day get better at doing the exercises that help me focus more deeply…
