DISASTER:
It is a Catastrophe, mishap, calamity or grave occurrence in any area.
It arises from natural or man-made causes, or by accident or negligence.
It results in substantial loss of life or human suffering or damage to and destruction of property or damage to or degradation of environment.
Disaster is of such a nature or magnitude as to be beyond the coping capacity of the community of the affected area.
TYPES OF DISASTER:
Two types of disaster can occur:
1. Natural Disaster:
Geophysical e.g. earthquakes and volcanoes.
Meteorological e.g. storms and cloudbursts.
Hydrological e.g. floods and avalanches.
Climatologically e.g. extreme temperature and droughts
Biological e.g. epidemics.
2. Man-made Disaster:
Chemical e.g. Bhopal gas Tragedy.
Biological e.g. Anthrax Attacks in US.
Radiological e.g. Chernobyl.
Nuclear e.g. Japan.
Accidents e.g. chemical and transport.
Wars and conflicts.
Famines.

Disasters occur in varied forms
Some are predictable in advance.
Some are annual or seasonal.
Some are sudden and unpredictable.

DISASTER MANAGEMENT:
LEVELS OF ARMED FORCE:
a) Central Level: Cabinet secretariat (Military Wing).
b) Service Head-quarters :
(i) Military Operations Directorate (MI-6) at Army Headquarters.
(ii) Director of Naval operations at Naval-headquarters.
(iii) Directorate of Operations (Transport and Maritime) at Air Headquarters.
c) Command and Lower Formation Headquarters: Senior General Staff Officers. (Operations)
d) State Level: Service liaison officer deputed to form a part of Joint Control Centre.
