The Odyssey
In The Odyssey written by Homer, Odysseus once said,” Be strong, saith my heart; I am a soldier; I have seen worse sights than this.” Some may say his weakness interfere with his heroism. I believe that his courage, intelligence, and ambition are what make him a perfect model of an epic hero. Odysseus is a perfect model of an epic hero because of his courage. When Odysseus and his men first arrived at Cyclopes’ Island they noticed giant footprints. Odysseus’ men knew they would be in danger if they stayed any longer than they should. They wanted to grab as much cheese and sheep as they could and get back at sea. Odysseus insisted on seeing the monster and what he had to offer. Once they realized the Cyclops, Polyphemus, was unwelcoming, they planned to escape. Odysseus first had to walk up to this rude and ugly monster that just devoured some of his men and get him drunk enough to blind him without noticing. On Helios, the Sun God, Island Odysseus tells his men not to eat the cow. They still ate the cow despite Odysseus’ warnings. Helios was so mad about it that he asked Zeus to get back at Odysseus for him or he will rise or set in the underworld. So Zeus struck lightning on Odysseus’ ship, sinking it and killing all except Odysseus. After losing all his men in this tragic event, Odysseus thought of nothing else but getting home. When he actually does arrive home he notices that his wife, Penelope, has tons of suitors wanting to marry her. At this point also Penelope, his wife, had lost hope of Odysseus’ return. His ambition drove him to fight all the suitors to be with family after 20 long and hard years. A man with this much ambition must be an epic
