Though generally a capital market has two prongs, the stock market and the debt market, Bangladesh market has only stock market in active operation, as a debt market is still in its incipient stage. However, the stock market is also considerably small thanks to a conducive regulatory regime, lack of incentives and local business ethos.…

This paper examined the relationship between stock market development and economic growth of two Asian developing countries, that is, Pakistan and Bangladesh, after the liberalization period of 1990s. The relationship measured were in terms of size (market capitalization), liquidity (total value of stocks traded and stock turnover ratio) and volume (total number of companies listed in the stock exchange of each of the country). The study of comparative analysis was done with the help of tables and charts. The econometric results of the study by employing the regression analysis showed that Pakistan stock markets contribute to the economic growth in terms of the large size of its stock market whereas Bangladesh stock market contributes to the economic growth in terms of the liquidity of its stock market. Bangladesh economic growth was found to be comparatively better than economic growth of Pakistan. The study revealed that the stock markets in Pakistan and Bangladesh do not play a major role in the economic growth but rather, these financial institutions are the driving forces for the economic growth of the country.…

Purpose: A corporate bond is a bond issued by a corporation. It is a bond that a corporation issues to raise money in order to expand its business. The term is usually applied to longerterm debt instruments, generally with a maturity date falling at least a year after their issue date. The study focuses on Bond market development in Bangladesh, an emerging market. The policy environment for bond market development in Bangladesh is studied with the initiatives by various sectors over the past decade (2001 – recent year). This paper also aims at understanding the hurdles Bangladesh is facing in developing its own local currency bond market over last decade. Design/ Methods: The study uses published secondary data from various relevant sources and the researchers have used personal observation and experience regarding the country’s socio economic and political background and their impact on the bond market. Findings: Developing bond markets is more complicated than developing equity markets. They operate best when they have money market and longer-term benchmarks. Numerous factors suggest that Bangladesh could not develop an active, local-currency, and fixed-income market. The obstacles include improper regulations, unwilling investors and borrowers, lack of market confidence and ineffective infrastructure. The market participants in Bangladesh are skeptical whether the government can succeed in this endeavor. Practical Implications: Because of large quantum of long-term fund requirement with the liberalization of the energy and communication sectors, major infrastructure sectors like oil & gas, power, telecommunications, shipping, airlines and port development, the government financing for such sectors would be lesser in the days to come. Existing financial system of the country does not have either the capability or the instruments to support these sectors. The rational…

The arguments of Demirguc-Kunt et al. (1996) indicate that economies without well-functioning stock markets may suffer from three types of imperfections: first, opportunities for risk diversification are limited for investors and entrepreneurs, second, firms are unable to optimally structure their financing packages and third, countries without well functioning markets lack information about the prospects of firms whose shares are traded, thereby restricting the promotion of investment and its’ efficiency.…

In 1980, the Investment Corporation of Bangladesh (ICB) became the pioneer in launching mutual funds in the capital market in the country. It was a milestone step for investors in our capital market. The then first private organisation, AIMS, evolved its professional mechanism in 1999 for organising mutual funds in Bangladesh. Mutual funds grew slowly over the period of time and had only been close-ended since beginning of its operation in the capital market. In 2010, also the first-ever open-end mutual fund was floated in the capital market by the Prime Finance Asset Management Company and after that, various mutual funds came to the market and mainly operated under the BSEC (Mutual Fund) Rules-2001, Trust Act, 1882 and Registration Act, 1908. Mutual funds pool money of both individual and institutional investors allowing the funds to achieve the economies of scale by reducing costs and increasing investment returns, divisibility and diversification, prudent management for stock picking and timing, reinvestment of dividends, interest and capital gains, tax efficiency and flexibility of trading system with a view to fulfilling the objectives of diversifying the risks and to earn maximum returns.…
