In 1971, from the Canada multiculturalism act, Canadian government had admitted that Canada was a multicultural country, and accepted it’s English and French double property. In 1867, when Canada was built, the proportion of English and French people occupied 91.6%. Although Canada has been colonized by French people first, English still give a huge influence on its cultures, and nowadays these two public languages are both used in Canada. Therefore, Canada should be considered as a product of two founding nations.

in Canada, but has also made a huge contribution to Canadian’s development in economics, politics and infrastructure. In the year of 1534, the French explorer Jacques Cartier made 3 voyages through the St.Lawrence Seaway to aboriginal settlements at Stadacona [Québec] and Hochelaga [Montréal]. However, after the third failed attempt by Cartier, Samuel de Champlain, one of the major figures in Canadian cultural heritage sailed to Acadia with Pierre Dugua de Mons, who planned to establish a French colony there in 1604. Science that time, the French people started the colony in Canada and named it as New France.
From 1608 to 1763, New France was a colony of French. During that time, Samuel de Champlain established Quebec as the center of a powerful colony in 1604, in order to help the economical development in New France, which had also benefited the Fur trade with Aboriginals. Because of his contribution, the fur trade had become the real economic driver; the harvesting of furs had created wealth, stimulated the exploration of the continent and created alliances with many Aboriginal peoples.
In addition, the French government had also made some political dictions in Canada, like building some French laws. A most important one is the royal government which came out in the year of 1663 by the King Louis XIV. The one who just came to the throne at twenty-two years old, wanted to made New France part of the great empire during his reign. From the Eighteenth-Century Administrative Structure of New France, people can see clearly that the King controlled the minister of Marine and Colonies. Those people who also had the power ordered the Governor-General and Intendant supervising local governors and Subdelegates of the Intendant respectively. And those who didn’t have the power were the Captains o the Militia and The People. As a result, the law from French developed well in Canada, and the French immigrants treated the politics, language ,culture and religion which brought from the main land samely as when they stayed at France, because in some ways, they had built the New France as another France.
The French’s colonization brought not only the new political system in New France, but also some modern technologies to help the aboriginal people survive or develop civilization.
In 1642, Jeanne de Mance , one of the first lay women who have been educated by the Ursuline nuns in France, established the first hospital. Although this hospital included only six beds for man, two for women, and was surrounded by a defensive stockade, it had been called “Angel of the Colony” by the people of Ville Marie. With the purpose of leading the aboriginals life to a high civilization place, the Ursulines, led by Marie de I’ Incarnation of Tours, came to Quebec in 1639 to educate French and Aboriginal Catholic girls. Marie de I’ Incarnation also learned Aboriginal language and wrote dictionaries, histories and catechisms in the Algonquian and Iroquoian languages, which also helped the Canadian’s history for recording the past in the …show more content…
books. Nevertheless, the English-Canadian history also played a key role in modern Canadian history. It can be seen clearly after the British victory in the Seven-years War, when the British conolizers stated to transform it into a British society. During the seven years’ war between the French and British, there is no denying that the British is the biggest winner. Following the Treaty of Paris, France was forced to give up the whole controlling of Canada to British, except for 5 towns, and must move out from India. Furthermore, Britain became the king country of overseas colonies. However, the English shifted all the cost during the war to the people who lived in North American colonies, which had caused the discontent of local people.
Until 1760 the British came into Newfoundland and St.
Johns built a settlement, and claimed that this was the first British colonies in North America, though the colony’s culture and behaviors still follow the French ways, because it’s hard to change one’s system when it falls into a pattern for a couple years as the First Nations will obey the French behaviors not on purpose. However, facing the sturdy protective barrier that the French had built, English began to change the New France by using force. In October 1763, the English King ordered Canada to use their cultural behavior instead of using French’s, as against of those French immigrations. One year later, the Great Britain allowed them to use French system in Quebec , in order to alleviate the feeling of resentment and antagonism from colonies, which is beneficial to dominate the settlement. Afterwards, British changed the behaviors of aboriginal people into English ways smoothly, and now in today’s Canada, you can hardly see people act French behaviour in some
provinces.
People can also see the results from the language spoken in Canada nowadays. Between 1825 and 1846, more than half a million immigrants came to Canada directly from Britain, and by 1871 over 2 million people in Canada listed the British Isles as their land of origin. These new Canadians brought English patterns with them, which they had learned from their parents. Following the research in 2006, the number of Canadian who speak English holds 58.8% and French speakers took up 23.2%. This result means that the effect of British has overpassed that of France, in terms of language.
As this paper has argued, Canada is a country which includes both English culture and French culture. The French explorers brought the first wave of innovation, which changed the fall behind knowledge from the aboriginal people. And during British colonization, English civilization had been put into the First Nation’s head. As a conclusion neither the British nor France’s contribution could be denied.
