In Tartuffe (1664), as in his other plays, Moliere employs classic comic devices of plot and character. Here, a foolish, stubborn father blocking the course of young love: an impudent servant commenting on her superiors’ actions; a happy ending involving a marriage facilitated by implausible means. He often uses such devices, however, to comment on his own immediate social scene, imagining how universal patterns play themselves out in a specific historical context.…

Society has been affected by religion ever since mankind existed. People’s values and morals could be altered from the belief of any religion because religion sets rules for one who chooses to believes it. If a rule were to be broken, a sin is presented upon the person. Society back in Salem Massachusetts of 1692 believes there are witches among the town. Anyone who doesn't believe there are any is automatically assumed to be working with the devil or is a witch. Religion may or may not be a big factor in the results of the Salem Witch Trials. Religion has not only been part of the Salem’s government system, but it has also been affecting the decisions of society.…
In 1634 the first safe haven for Catholics was chartered by King Charles I, and named after his wife, Queen Henrietta Maria. Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore, who established the key principle of religious toleration through his instructions. “ His Lord requires his said Governor & Commissioners that in their voyage to Mary Land they be very careful to preserve unity & peace amongst all the passengers on Ship-board, and that they suffer no scandal nor offence to be given to any of the Protestants, whereby any just complaint may hereafter be made, by them, in Virginea or in England, and that for that end, they cause all Acts of Roman Catholic Religion to be done as privately as may be, and that they instruct all the Roman Catholics to be silent upon all occasions of discourse concerning matters of Religion; and that the said Governor & Commissioners treat the Protestants with as much mildness and favor as Justice will permit. And this to be observed at Land as well as at Sea” (Baltimore,…
During the seventeenth and eighteenth century in North America, toleration for religious differences did increase. North America was an area of the world that was considered much more tolerating of different religious groups than in other parts of the world. There were many reasons for this, and just some of them had to do with Jonathon Edwards, a radical preacher during this time period, the Maryland Toleration Act, a law that was passed in 1649, and Roger Williams, who was a pastor that wanted his followers to break away from the Anglicans.…

From the 1500s to the 1800s, religion was inherently a part of daily life and had an inevitable influence on state governing. China’s rigid state formation was founded 200 years prior and aspects from this style of governing are still in tact today (Religions Place In the Politics of Ancient India). The Chinese generally lived by the standards of Confucius; a philosophy focused on humanity, relationships, and placed a high value on education (John Lagerwey, p. 234). Meanwhile in India, which was conquered by the Muslim Mughals in the 1500s, the people were practicing both Hinduism, the worship of many God’s incorporating an austere caste system and a strong belief in reincarnation; and Islam, the Faith of the Muslims, requiring absolute…
Monsieur Meursault’s character development profoundly influences how the audience perceives him. In the beginning Monsieur goes to his mother’s funeral; when there, he does not exhibit much empathy towards the situation. “Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know” (Camus 3). Reacting to his mother’s death in a cold nonchalant way gives the audience the impression that Meursault is emotionally aloof. Then, towards the end of the novel he begins to have more emotive sentiments. When a priest comes to Meursault’s jail cell to talk about religion, Meursault has an impassioned response. “Then… something inside me snapped. I started yelling at the top of my lungs, and I insulted him” (Camus 120). Compared to his casual response earlier, this passionate response shows the audience how he has progressed. Meursault’s major character development throughout the story helps the audience sympathize with him because everybody grows and develops in life. This character development is majorly influenced by the relationships that Monsieur Meursault…
