role of television
Television, TV, the tube. All these words are one thing that consumes people’s lives. Many inventions have come about in order to allow us to watch all our must see shows. Everything from TiVo to Netflix allows us to watch movies and shows we otherwise would have missed in our busy lives. It transports us to a different world for a few minutes or hours. The role of Television is that it allows everyday people to be transported to different worlds thus forgetting, if just for a couple minutes, their everyday lives.

I personally don’t watch television that much. One thing I do watch is Netflix.. The ease with which I can instantly watch a show is incredible. Old TV shows and old movies are available easily and instantly. I have known people that call out of work just to finish a season of their favorite TV show. Is it the ease with which they can have that at their fingertips or the actual content they are watching? To me though it is the content. It allows me to forget about the pressures of everyday life and just focus on what’s in front of me.

Nowadays cable and satellite companies allow viewers to record their favorite shows to avoid missing anything. It’s a neat invention but so many times, consumers record content and only end up watching a small portion of it later. This seems all too common with DVR’s. There is not enough time in the day to watch everything. I believe people see something in a commercial preview and want to be a part of that. They want to know what it’s about and how they can relate to that particular factual or fictional reality.

When big primetime events happen, everyone is talking about them the next day. Or they are also on social media talking about events that happened. It’s in human nature to want to be a part of what everyone is talking about. In order to do that, we need to know what everyone is talking about so we can contribute to the conversation. It is also because of this that people want to be a part of television in order to enhance their social status.

There is so much technology out there that has been invented to enhance our lives with entertainment. The main component of them all is the television. Anything you can see on your phone or tablet can be seen on the television. Anything you want to record is accessible through the television. People spend so much time in front of a TV. Many people view it as an addiction. I see how they can view it that way if those people let it consume their lives. I view it as an escape from the daily stresses of life.

Why do we watch TV? Is it the draw to live vicariously through the miraculously genius doctors on House? The lure towards the dangerous lives of FBI agents on Criminal Minds? The attraction towards something new, something we don’t have in our own lives? In Barbara Ehrenreich’s The Worst Years of our Lives, this is the question she asks. People on TV, she points out, are never seen watching TV themselves. Modern man has become a couch potato, part of a society that would rather watch a football game, faces full of junk food and soda, than actually play one, all to avoid getting sweaty, or tired, or because it’s painful. Maybe we watch TV because the people on the television are more interesting than we are. They’re definitely more active.…

People now need to think and reason to keep up with the plot of the show. Instead of just sitting there watching a television show people actually need to think about the show in order to follow along. Steven Johnson says “Television may be more passive than video game, but there are degrees of passivity. Some narratives force you to do work to make sense of them, while others just let you settle into the couch and zone out,” (63). This quote from Steven Johnson is explaining how some television shows make you work to understand the outcome, while others allow the viewer to be more passive and just enjoy. Television differs from video games in that it does not always require a viewers full attention to be…

Having the television right in front of us leaves us with no other choice than to watch it. The moment we decide to turn the TV on and select a channel, we simply shut our brain down. For instance, “You no more challenge your mind by watching these intelligent shows than you challenge your body watching Monday Night Football” (Steven Johnson). Once we are in front of the television, all we can think of is, well, nothing. Most people are so caught up with the show that they don’t even realize the real situations surrounding them. We often tend to use television as a probe to escape reality.…

Well, those were just the 'WOW' factors of Television. However, its not all good! For instance, while I was in middle-school, I had this unforgettable poem on a couple who was highly addicted to TV. They watched Television for days and nights together; never did they make a single movement! It seemed as if Television was the one and only sole reason for them to stay alive. Suddenly, after a few days, the electricity went off making the screen go blank. Its just at that point of time that they looked at each other for the first time ever and exchanged some warm 'Hello's and 'How do you do's. However, just minutes later, the screen was back in motion and so was the couple back…
