Role Of Violence In Macbeth

Any individual can fall into bad patterns because all individuals possess a sinful nature. Even a person with a good heart and a desire to do the right thing oftentimes, does the wrong thing. Sin has an inevitable and unavoidable presence in all men. In the early 17th century tragedy Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses violence to portray the sinful nature that lives in all men to show how an individual becomes overcome by evil, even with seemingly virtuous character traits. Battle has the ability to bring out the violence in any individual. War proves to have long-term, scarring effects on soldiers and sometimes result in the loss of people’s mental state. Soldiers live to serve their country. However, they encounter terrible circumstances that bring violence to the surface. “So they doubly redoubled strokes upon the foe. Except they meant to bathe in reeking wounds, or memorize another Golgotha” (I.ii.38-40). The captain tells stories of the battle and explains how Macbeth and Banquo act bravely during the battle. The captain delivers the news of Macbeth and Banquo’s teaming up to face their enemies. Oftentimes, individuals surrender to the people around them and submit to persuasion. In the case of violence, the previously mentioned trait holds more danger on account of the fact that people constantly want to prove themselves. “We are men, my liege” (III.i.94). Lady Macbeth persuades her husband to follow through with murdering King Duncan. Afterwards, MacBeth has the two murderers question their manliness in order to persuade them to murder Banquo. Macbeth uses his power and manipulates the murderers to do what he wants. They act out of violence in an attempt to prove their
