Role of a teacher
The Role of the Teacher

Introduction

According to Cruickshank, Bainer & Metcalf (1995):
“Teaching should be a conscious, deliberate act, resulting from thoughtful decision making about what to teach and how students can learn best”. It is therefore imperative that the correct teaching strategies be employed to achieve the desired learning outcomes. It is equally important that teachers assume certain roles in and outside of the classroom.

A teacher 's role involves far more than just standing in front of a classroom and lecturing. Actually, even though a teacher may spend a good portion of the day in the classroom, the actual teaching component is only part of the job. An effective teacher understands that teaching involves wearing multiple hats to ensure that students receive a quality education.

My Best Teacher

The best teacher I ever had throughout my years as a student was my sixth grade teacher, aptly named Mrs. Power. Not only was she strict and encouraging, she was also kind and thoughtful. She utilized several different approaches in teaching and was well respected by both her students and her peers alike. Mrs Power was patient with each student, and it was evident that she knew we all learnt differently. She tried her best to explain assignments and other tasks given to us, in a way so that we could understand properly (Lecturer/explainer role). Taking care not to speak too much.
Mrs. Power was always punctual and well-prepared for her classes (Prepared teacher role). Even though she had a strong voice, she had a soft heart, so we weren’t afraid to approach her with questions. Role-plays and story-telling were a regular part of her classes and even though we the students were sometimes shy to get involved, she would always encourage us do our best and explain what to do when necessary (Organization role). This stalwart of education, would also encourage us to discover new stuff for ourselves. She didn’t spend too much time talking, but instead assumed much of the counseling/enabling role, which basically helped us to study on our own so we could become good, independent learners.

My worst Teacher

My worst teacher wouldn’t appear until several years later while I was in university. She too had a domineering presence but was quite dogmatic and downright scary. She wasn’t liked by many. Questions were discouraged and even when we had questions, we didn’t want to ask them, because of her attitude. It seemed as if she enjoyed hearing her powerful voice over ours and she spoke quite a bit during lessons. Even spending several minutes speaking on matters totally unrelated to the subject being taught. Even though she was punctual, always prepared and very brilliant, she was way too unapproachable and not very helpful.
I would never want to be seen as such a teacher. I want to help my students to understand my lessons and teach them how to learn independently of me.

Conclusion

Teachers should seek to sharpen their skills constantly and try to improve their teaching strategies, so as to educate their learners. Clearly, each student learn differently, so different approaches should be exercised when teaching. Patience is a key factor of being a “good teacher” and should be exercised as much as possible. The role of the teacher is to educate and empower learners, so they can eventually educate themselves.

Memorable teachers are not the ones, who are the most pleasant to their students, but they are not the toughest ones either, they are the one that make you work for your knowledge, and you appreciate it, naturally much later in life. Mrs. Wright was very kind, compassionate, and honest no matter what the subject was or how she thought we were doing in school. She would always search for ways on how someone could improve. She has the skills to make you want to perform better, and continuously work to improve. This teacher had the passion to teach, and loved working with students, wonderful and necessary qualities to hold. She was eager to do whatever it took for a student to be successful, and to succeed in his or her classes. She always had a positive attitude, and strived for success. She would always say hello, ask about your day, tell you to have a wonderful day no matter what the day bring or crosses your path. She knew, and learn quickly that I have test anxiety, knew I always studied for hours on end, knew I knew the answers too, but once a test was placed before me, my mind would go blank, still does to a degree. She taught me some great testing strategies, ones that I still use day. This teacher was very inspirational, and gave you the courage to strive for success. Something I hope to match in my teaching…

Mother Teresa stated, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are endless.” It was those kind words that I remember from each individual teacher I had growing up. I remember spending countless hours learning with different techniques from different teachers. I’ll never forget Mrs. Marie Simcoe, for she was that kind voice echoing endlessly. She was my kindergarten teacher. I remember always wanting to help her and to be just like her. She was kind hearted and soft spoken. She taught with care and did everything she could to get her students to understand without a word of frustration.…

Looking back on my education, there are plenty of teachers that I felt were effective in getting me to learn material, but I will mention just two. Teacher A was my 8th grade and 10th grade math teacher. He didn’t necessarily make math easier in any way, but he made math much more fun because you looked forward to going to his class. Teacher A always used simple jokes, often requiring a very dry humor, which made me constantly pay attention in class so I could catch his different jokes. He also had the ability to demand respect in his class without ever really enforcing anything. He was simply such an amazing teacher that everyone respected his class and no one ever acted up. Teacher B, my 8th grade science teacher, also had a big impact on my education for the better. I enjoyed going to her classes because she was able to connect with me and a few of my friends on more of a personal level. She took an interest in our lives and made sure we were all on the path toward better futures. She, unlike Teacher A, demanded respect in her classroom in more of an authoritative way. Her students knew that if they acted up, she would not skip a beat to send them to the office, resulting in very few problems.…

Over the course of my years of schooling I have had many teachers. I’ve had some of the best such as my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Moore, who taught me how to learn math, my eighth grade science teacher, Mrs. Turner, who taught me to have fun in school, but still be serious, my tenth grade chemistry teacher, Mrs. Huggins, who made class hard also made it enjoyable at the same time. The best teacher I have ever had thought taught me one of the most important things in life, how to write. She may not have been the nicest lady as she gave me my first detention in ten years of school. (To this day it was still my only detention) Her class was the second hardest class I ever had in my four years of high school; the only thing harder was AP psychology,…

When I think back to my most memorable teacher I immediately am reminded of my third grade teacher Ms. Castaldi. Her classroom was set up in small groups of four around the room, her desk in the middle. I liked this classroom arrangement as a child because I felt like she was one of the students. Ms. Castadli treated all her students with respect and was extremely caring and understanding, like a mother. She had a true passion for what she did and it really showed because all of her students were successful in the classroom.…
