Being a member of the Mighty Cougar basketball team, there were a couple of basic skills I needed to know, such as passing, dribbling and shooting the ball. I wanted to show my teammates and coaches that I could bring the ball down the court and successfully execute a play. As a Point guard, it was my job to take the ball down the court, and if I couldn’t do that then I had no place on the team. During game situations where the score is close, the other team may try and pressure the ball handler up the court to attempt and force a turnover. So with the help of the coach I learned to keep my head up, make short crisp passes and to keep the ball close to my side when dribbling. During our game against Brandies I was able to do just that. We were up by 2 with 30 seconds left and Brandies had their full court press in full swing. It was my duty to handle the ball down the court and using the…

A bead of sweat rolls down my neck as I take a deep breath and position myself in front of the goal. I look from the soccer ball to the goal and back to the ball again, deciding if I should take the shot. In a split second, I must decide. Through hastened process analysis, I elect to drop the ball back to an awaiting teammate, a calculated risk, but – tragedy- the other team intercepts and takes possession of the ball, losing my team’s chance to score. During a lecture on not doubting myself and always shooting in the 18-yard box, I vividly remember my coach telling me, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” This fairly famous quote somehow hit home when directed at me from my coach. It has motivated me in not only sports,…

For example, I went on a 12-4 run when we first started playing the game. During this time I was super excited because I hadn’t played the game in a very long time and I was keeping up with my friend who is extremely good at the game. I was gaining self-confidence in my game and was constantly thinking about the next basketball move that I was going to make. I was down by about 4 points at the beginning of the second half, so I was still feeling pretty good about my game. From there, however, he went on a huge run that effectively took me out of the game. It was at this time that my self-confidence began to go down and I began to think of other things that are going on in my life at the moment. I wasn’t nearly as focused as I was in the beginning of the game, even though I still had a little hope and was still trying to catch back up. It was this lack of focus, however, that caused me to fall farther and farther behind in points until the game finally ended. I felt completely normal after the game had ended, except for a feeling of relief that the game was over and that I couldn’t get any further behind in…

Mindfulness, for this study, was measured utilizing The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), where athletes rated how often they had experiences such as, “I find it difficult to stay focused on what’s happening in the present (Gooding & Gardner 2009).” The athletes free throw percentages were then tracked over the course of the following season. Results indicated that levels of mindfulness significantly predicted game free throw percentage. Therefore, the more mindful the athlete, the higher their respective free throw percentage.…

I can’t wait for Basketball season to start. I knew I would do good in this league. The season has started and I have a 100% 3pt average so I can pretty much shoot anywhere on the court and make it. I got put on a team and now I am ready the best person my team because like I said earlier I have a 100% 3pt average and my teammates barely have an 80% layup average. One thing that is amazing to me is that I score at least 40 points a game because I shoot about 10 3 pointers a game and 5 normal shots that are worth 2 points. If there is a team that can keep up with my team and there are only like 2 seconds left and we are down by 2 I can shoot a long shot and win off a buzzer beater 3. This season was amazing and I can’t wait for…

    1. Introduction. In these days of superstar basketball players, you would think that shooting free throws should be as much a formality, and just as exciting, as the extra point in professional football. Not so. Take for example Shaquille O’Neal, the subject of our first model, who as of the end of the 2004–2005 regular season had a career free throw percentage of 53.1%. His troubles seemed to increase during the playoffs, where he shot around 45% from the line. Shaquille is not alone in his free throw shooting troubles. In fact nearly one-third of all NBA players shoot less than 70% from the foul line. When a basketball player steps up to shoot a free throw he does not usually think (unless he also happens to be a mathematician), “I wonder if my free throw shooting percentage would improve if I changed my initial shooting angle,” or “I wonder how air resistance affects the trajectory of my shot,” or even “Should I be aiming for the back rim, front rim, or the middle of the basket?” We present here a calculus-based model for basketball free throws to show that they should address some of these musings. We begin by conjecturing that some players shoot…

The ability to control our limbs in space may come naturally, but being able to pass and shoot with precision during a basketball game takes special training and repetitive practice. Performing drills on and off the court with a basketball enables children to grade their muscle forces, control the position of their bodies in response to an opponent or a pass, and plan out…

The Canadian psychologist Albert Bandura identified a specific form of confidence, known as self-efficacy. This is not an overall self-confidence but varies within each situation we find ourselves in. Most people will choose to participate in sports at which they have a high self-efficacy, or belief in their ability at the task in hand.…
