The setting takes place in Texas, United States. This is significant because African Americans have lived in Texas for more than four hundred years. The setting shows how different the past was from now. It is also significant because Texas wasn’t like any other state in the US. Another significant thing about the setting in Texas is that Texas went through so many changes in those periods of time; so many event happened that changed the world today.…
Another example that the setting contributes an enormous part to the story is where Bet lives. She lives in an upstairs apartment which is way too nice and pricey for Arnold and her. The setting sets a struggle for Bet because she has can not take care of Arnold and pay the bills of the house. Therefore her having to send Arnold away. Which implies that the meaning of the work is that we all have to do things we aren't fond of in our…
In the beginning of the novel, the importance of the setting was so the main plot could take place. Without the setting of a neighborhood our main character, Michael, may not have benn able to fire his new rifle and have killed someone in the process. Other events such as the incident in the garage at the beginning effected how he felt during the party. During the party the setting of a crowded…

1. The setting for the short novel, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, is in the state of Mississippi, in the early 1930’s, which means that it is right during the middle of the Great Depression. I believe the setting is very important to the book because in Mississippi during those times there was a lot of racism and racial segregation, the African Americans people could not do the same things that Caucasian, white people could do. Also the setting is important because if they author had put the book set in a place like New York City the racism would not be the same as if she set the book in a place like Mississippi or really anywhere in the South. In addition the setting is important because if it had been set in the…

Looking back to when you were the young age of 13, do you remember cheating on tests, stealing pistols, and being threatened to be hung? In 1933, it wasn’t easy being black with the unfairness and cruelties of Jim Crow Laws. Written by Mildred D. Taylor, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is a great example of how your feelings can impact your actions greatly. This is shown in a young character named T.J. As a ramification of Jim Crow, he feels insignificant which causes him to make terrible decisions. Not only does he cheat on two tests, but also chooses to hang out with R.W. and Melvin (two bad influences), and steal a pistol.…

A Sound of Thunder is a great story written by Ray Bradbury, however, Nethergrave is an even better story written by Gloria Skurzynski. Though both of these stories are science fiction, I enjoyed reading Nethergrave more than Sound of Thunder, the story has more of a unique feature to it, seeing as it is not set in the future and most science fiction stories are set in the future like A Sound of Thunder. Also the imagery in Gloria’s story grabs my attention unlike in Sound of Thunder. Both of these stories are great at grabbing the readers attention as it grabbed mine.…
